A Thankful Heart, a Clear Head:
Staying Safe This Thanksgiving

The turkey’s roasting, the pies are cooling, and the family group chat is buzzing — it's Thanksgiving! While we’re all gearing up for a weekend full of food, laughter, and maybe a little too much football, let’s not forget one very important ingredient in our holiday plans: a safe trip home.

Keep the Celebration Fun — and Safe

Before you raise a glass, make sure you’ve already planned how to get home safely. It’s easy to think, “I’ll be fine,” after one drink — but even one can be one too many when you’re behind the wheel.

Plan Ahead, Stay Ahead

Before your first sip, decide how you’ll get home:

  • Designate a sober driver before the party starts.
  • Call a taxi or rideshare — your future self will thank you.
  • Host smart — offer plenty of food and non-alcoholic drinks.

Speak Up When It Counts

If you see someone about to drive after drinking, step in. Take the keys, call them a ride, or offer your couch for the night. And if you spot a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement — it could save a life.

The True Cost of Drunk Driving

For teens, car crashes are a leading cause of death, and almost one-third of teen drivers killed in fatal crashes involved underage drinking. In fact, about 30% of all crash fatalities in the US involve drunk drivers.

Drunk driving doesn’t just risk lives; it also carries a staggering price tag — about $57 billion a year in economic losses from alcohol-related crashes. But the real cost can’t be measured in dollars. It’s the families changed forever, the empty seats at the table, and the moments lost that remind us why safety matters most.

This Thanksgiving, let’s make smart choices so we can all enjoy the season’s best gift — time with the people we love. A sober ride home isn’t just the responsible choice; it’s the thankful one.

Drive safe. Stay smart. Celebrate responsibly.

On the Move: October TPO Adventures in Outreach

VCARD Icebreaker

On Wednesday, October 8, the Volusia County Association for Responsible Development (VCARD) hosted its annual Icebreaker—an evening dedicated to networking, collaboration, and forward-thinking discussions about responsible development in Volusia County. The event united local government officials, industry professionals, and community leaders to exchange ideas and forge meaningful connections.

The Volusia Flagler TPO participated with an information table, engaging attendees in conversations about our role in regional transportation planning and the ways we’re shaping the future of mobility in our communities.

Port Orange Family Days

On Saturday, October 11, the TPO joined the fun at Port Orange Family Days, connecting with families and community members of all ages. Our team sparked conversations about bicycle, pedestrian, and driver safety—important topics for keeping our roads safe for everyone. E-bikes were a hot topic of the day, and we were excited to share a great resource from FDOT to keep e-bike riders informed and safe on the road.

White Cane Awareness Day

On October 15, White Cane Awareness Day was celebrated in Daytona Beach in partnership with the Conklin-Davis Center for the Visually Impaired. The event highlighted the importance of mobility and independence for individuals who are blind or visually impaired while educating the community about pedestrian safety and the significance of the white cane as a symbol of freedom and equal access. The TPO hosted an outreach table, engaging attendees and distributing safety items such as reflective gear to promote visibility and pedestrian awareness.

Attendees heard proclamations read by Volusia County Council Vice Chair Matt Reinhart and Daytona Beach City Manager Deric Feacher, as well as other informative speakers. The TPO heard inspiring stories from those attending and participated in a walk across the intersection of White Street and Dunn Avenue, which emphasized safe crossings and our shared responsibility on the road. The collaboration underscored a shared commitment to creating safer, more inclusive streets—where everyone, regardless of ability, can move confidently and independently through their community.

Your Volusia-Flagler 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP)

On September 17, 2025, the Volusia-Flagler TPO Board adopted the 2050 LRTP. This plan outlines the region’s vision for the future of transportation —including roadway, transit, and bicycle and pedestrian improvements—through the year 2050. The Cost Feasible Plan Element of the LRTP prioritizes the transportation projects that can be funded based on projected available resources.

The Volusia-Flagler 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan:

  • Identifies future needs and improvements for pedestrian, bicycle, transit, highway, and freight mobility
  • Guides the expenditure of transportation funds
  • Ensures new transportation improvements meet community values
  • Prioritizes transportation projects
  • Promotes safe and efficient transportation services
