River to Sea TPO Announces New Name

In case you missed it, last month, the River to Sea TPO announced that it would be operating under the name Volusia-Flagler Transportation Planning Organization (VFTPO). As part of the TPO’s Apportionment Plan approved earlier this year, the TPO expanded its Metropolitan Planning Area (MPA) Boundary to cover all of Flagler County and will now cover both Volusia and Flagler Counties in their entirety. This expansion provides improved transportation planning coordination between all agency partners and allows the TPO to plan and implement a comprehensive regional transportation plan that considers the current and future growth occurring across the entirety of Volusia and Flagler Counties. Renaming the TPO to the Volusia-Flagler TPO provides an identity that reflects the geographic area that we cover. In future documents and plans, you will soon see a new brand identity that reflects our new name. Initially, we have launched our new logo and in the coming months we will be designing and implementing our new website www.VFTPO.org. Stay tuned for more updates!

Port Orange Bike Safety Day Recap

On the morning of Saturday, November 16, 2024, the Volusia-Flagler TPO was joined by Bike/Walk Central Florida, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), City of Port Orange, Port Orange Police Department, and Volusia County Schools for Bike Safety Day and Bike Rodeo. The event, held at Riverwalk Park, hosted a bicycle skills course for kids aged 6-12. The Volusia-Flagler TPO expertly fit and donated 74 bicycle helmets for children and adults! In addition to fitting helmets, the event featured a free bike safety check station, a bike skills course for kids to practice essential riding skills, including starting and stopping, hazard avoidance, hand signals, and more, and vendor booths. December TPO Meeting Cancellations

All Volusia-Flagler TPO Board and Advisory Committee meetings have been cancelled for the December winter break.

Meetings will resume in January as follows:

• Executive Committee – January 3
• TDLCB Quality Assurance Committee (QAC) – January 8
• Transportation Disadvantaged Local Coordinating Board (TDLCB) – January 8
• Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) – January 8
• Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) – January 21
• Technical Coordinating Committee (TCC) – January 21
• Volusia-Flagler TPO Board – January 22

The city of Deltona will be holding a Final Comprehensive Plan Workshop on Monday, December 16, 2024, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Deltona City Commission Chambers located at 2345 Providence Blvd. Deltona, FL 32725. More information is available here.

Stay Safe this Holiday Season

During the Christmas and New Year holiday periods, we often see a rise in drunk-driving deaths. Recent data shows December drunk driving deaths are the highest in almost 15 years. As a result, you'll likely see more law enforcement on the roads as part of Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. The campaign, which runs from December 13 through January 1, aims to educate people about the dangers and consequences of driving drunk.

The Effects of Alcohol on Driving

Just one drink before driving can put you and others in danger because alcohol impairs thinking, reasoning, and muscle coordination. Did you know that a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.02 produces a decline in visual function and a decline in a person's ability to perform two tasks at the same time?
