Driver Safety Education Month 🚧
| |
🚦 Drive Smart, Stay Safe
Whether you’re an experienced motorist or just starting out, driver education and awareness are the keys to keeping Florida’s roads safe. The Safe Mobility for Life Coalition and Volusia-Flagler TPO encourage everyone to take a few minutes to assess their driving skills.
👵 Aging Drivers
For more than 15 years, FDOT’s Safe Mobility for Life Program has teamed up with Florida State University's Pepper Institute to support Florida’s aging road users. Their mission: cut fatalities, reduce injuries, and boost mobility. Visit their site for tips on age-related changes and proactive driving strategies.
👩🦱 Teen Drivers
Traffic crashes are a leading cause of teen deaths. Those most at risk include:
- Male drivers 16–19
- Teens driving with passengers
- Newly licensed teens
Florida’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system helps teens build experience safely before earning full driving privileges.
🌟 Takeaway
Whether you’re a teen or an older adult, resources are available to help you drive smarter. Take a moment to visit the Safe Mobility for Life Coalition and NTSB’s Teen Driver Safety websites for information on being a safe, smart driver. Together, we can make Florida’s roads safer for everyone.

🚴 Supporting TeenTober™ with Safety First
At the Volusia-Flagler TPO, we believe that safe, active transportation is important for the next generation. That’s why we were proud to partner with the John H. Dickerson Heritage Library in Daytona Beach during this year’s TeenTober™ celebration—a nationwide initiative that inspires teens to learn new skills, fuel their passions, and engage with their communities.
As part of the library’s bicycle prize event, the TPO provided properly fitted helmets to ten local tweens and teens who earned refurbished bicycles through the program. TPO staff worked to ensure each helmet fit correctly, because safety is just as important as mobility.
This effort was made possible through collaboration with the First Presbyterian Church of New Smyrna, the Volusia Flagler TPO, and the Friends of the Daytona Beach Regional Library, whose donations of bikes, locks, and helmets gave young riders the tools they need to explore their world. Together, we celebrated the hard work of local youth who participated in the library’s intensive literacy program this October.
The smiles on the winners’ faces reminded us why we do this work: helping young people stay safe, stay active, and stay inspired.

🚦 Volusia-Flagler TPO at the FACT Fair
The TPO was excited to participate in the FACT Fair at Campbell Middle School in Daytona Beach, where students, families, vendors, and organizations came together to provide community resources, including those related to safety and awareness.
At the TPO's information table, we shared resources on bicycle and pedestrian safety and connected directly with students and parents about safe travel practices. To help reinforce those lessons, we distributed bicycle lights, first aid kits, and reflective safety vests—tools designed to keep riders visible and prepared. We also ensured that those we spoke with were given information to review after the event, reinforcing the safety message.
The event was a great opportunity to engage with the community, encourage safe habits, and highlight the importance of active transportation for all ages. The next FACT Fair the TPO will be participating in will be held on Thursday, February 19, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm at Deltona Middle School. More information is available by clicking here.

Volusia-Flagler TPO Annual Holiday Open House & Toy Drive
🎄 Thank You for Joining Us!
We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us on December 11th for our 10th Annual Holiday Open House—and to all who generously contributed to the Toy Drive. Your support made the afternoon truly special! A special shout-out goes to First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach and Auxilium Manus Deo Corporation for their incredibly generous donations to our toy drive.
It was wonderful to connect, share laughter, and spend time together outside of our committee and board meetings. Events like these remind us how strong, caring, and dedicated our community is. In total, we collected 754 toys and gift cards, which were donated to The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia and the Department of Children & Families! Your donations stay local and benefit children and teens in Volusia and Flagler Counties.
