Bottom Line Up Front: The MLK Day rally in Richmond brought both sides of the gun debate into the Virginia Capitol Plaza after tense online rhetoric. Leading into the event, TRAC Analyst Cat Cooper provided a deeper dive into the 16 JAN arrest of three members of the white supremacy extremist group, The Base. Cat's research goes beyond much of the media reporting, connecting significant dots among three separate enclaves. The cells range from Michigan, Georgia, and Maryland. In November, The Base released a training camp video featuring a group photo of Base members (left) at a training camp in Silver Creek, Georgia. An FBI undercover agent in attendance purported that the training included the handling of firearms training and a pagan "blot" ritual to sacrifice a goat.

(Claim) Jama'atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (JAMBS - Ansaru): Ambush on Nigerian Army Convoy Killing At Least 22 Soldiers on Kaduna-Zaria ‎Highway in Kaduna, Nigeria - 17 January 2020
TRAC continues to monitor worsening ground conditions in several African nations. Analyst Hylda Fenton posted this week that on the significance of the claim at right. Kaduna, Nigeria is extremely far from Boko Haram (Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad) and Islamic State West Africa (ISWA / ISWAP) activities around the Maiduguri areas. Boko Haram released a video "Message to the Emir of Kano" in December 2014.  Jama'atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (Ansaru) hasn't had any activity as a group since 2013. The fact the claim was issued by an AQC media outlet claimed is a sign that AQC is trying to appear vast and capitalize on ANSARU's reemergence.
(Claim) Islamic State Sinai (ISS): "Military Source to Amaq Agency" An Egyptian F16 Shot Down, Near Shabana, South of Rafah, Sinai, Egypt- 14 January 2020
Senior Analyst Daniel Lebowitz followed a claim on the downing of an Egyptian F-16 in the Sinai. Daniel's assessment focused on the phrasing of the claim. According to his analysis, the "Military source to Amaq Agency" is intentional. Not only does it mirror claim phrasing of lone wolf events outside Syria and Iraq that Islamic State doesn't necessarily have definitive proof but also it is a not so subtle way of claiming that they have sympathizers reporting into Amaq confidential military communiques.
