Bottom Line Up Front:
TRAC Senior Analyst Daniel Lebowitz examines a shooting in Albuquerque during a rally
to topple the statue commemorating the Spanish conquistador, Juan de Oñate. Four gunshots emanated from armed members of a militia group counter-protesting nearby, wounding one victim. The shooter, identified as Stephen Ray Baca, is an alleged member of the New Mexico Civil Guard militia (NMCG); however, NMCG denied the suspect is a member of its group. The militia is comprised of many former law enforcement and military personnel who are dedicating themselves to protecting civilians and property. Earlier this month, Lebowitz analyzed NMCG leadership and its social media profiles. At that time, the group showed up at a New Mexico vigil for George Floyd, vowing to protect its citizens and property from violence.

TRAC INCIDENT REPORT: Inside Boogaloo Bois Steven Carrillo and Accomplice Robert Justus Plot to Murder Federal Security Officer in Oakland (29 May) & Carillo's Ambush on Police Officers in Ben Lomond (6 June), California
|
Senior TRAC Analyst, Daniel Lebowitz continues coverage of the premeditated targeting and murder of Federal Security officer by
Steven Carrillo and his accomplice Robert Justus.
The fact that the two plotted
to deliberately kill law enforcement officers and use Black Lives Matter protesters and large-scale demonstrations to shield their movements is an indication of the additional measures that should be taken for crowd control and security at future protests. The danger posed by radicalized service members cannot be underestimated: Carrillo's intensive training per his role in an elite unit providing Air Force security, his knowledge and experience handling explosive devices, and his homemade assault weapon further illustrates the threat posed by extremists in the ranks.

Jesus Alexander 'El Ruso' Sanchez Becomes Key Figure in the Sonoyta Operations of Ismael 'el Mayo' Zambada, Sinaloa Cartel Leader - Mexico
|
TRAC continues its close coverage of cartel activity including leadership positioning and dissent. Analyst Hylda Fenton profiles the positioning of Jesus Alexander 'El Ruso' Sanchez in the Sinaloa Cartel. Little is known about his criminal history or his true identity; although in English, "El Ruso" translates to "The Russian." However in contrast to his moniker, the real name of "El Ruso" is known to authorities as Jesús Alexánder Sánchez and the Southern California District Court has been building a criminal case against him since 2014; there remains an active arrest warrant. According to the information revealed by "Vincentillo" the United States was able to charge "El Ruso" with crimes related to drug trafficking.

TRAC INCIDENT REPORT: Ambush on FAMa Convoy in Diabaly-Goumacoura Road, Near Bouka Were, Central Mali
|
On 14 June 2020, at least a dozen trucks in FAMa patrol from Goma Coura camp were ambushed by an unknown number of militants.
Security gaps abound in the region between Mali and Burkina Faso. This attack represents the third jihadist attack on the same day in the area. Islamic State in Greater Sahara (ISGS) -or- Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) are most likely responsible. It could be that Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin Katiba Macina, led by the Malian Amadou Koufa, is trying to exert its power after the death of a major leader Sekou Cissé in early June and the announcement by French forces of the killing of AQIM's Abdelmalek Droukdel, also in early June. A bold attack such as the FAMa ambush would be a re-enforcement by those in the region of their power.

Tanzim Huras al-Din (Guardians of Religion / AQ IN Syria) Announces the Formation of A New Operations Room 'Stand Still Operations Room' in Cooperation With Four Other Groups, Syria
|
TRAC Analyst, Sophia Badawy has been following the activities of Tanzim Huras al-Din / Guardians of Religion / AQ in Syria, a group which has suffered a few setbacks in the month of June 2020. On 12 June 2020, Tanzim Huras al-Din led the formation of a new operations room 'Stand Firm Operations Room', replacing its previous "Incite the Believers" operations room. The new operations room consists of five groups: Tanzim Huras al-Din, Tansiqyat al-Jihad (Coordination of jihad,
Liwa al-Mukatilin al-Ansar (Supporters Fighters Brigade), Jabhat Ansar al-Din (Supporters of Religion Front), and Jama'a Ansar al-Islam (Supporters of Islam Group). This new alliance is not only to replenish the losses but also to wield more geopolitical influence in the crowded jihadi space of Idlib. How much input the other four groups will be allowed in the leadership decisions is unclear, but of the five groups within the operation room, Huras al-Din is the strongest.
