Take Action for the Farm Bill!

⚠️ Ask Your Legislators to Support the Milk from Family Dairies Act!

Dairy farming is a challenging business, made even harder thanks to market volatility, prices that often don’t cover farmers’ cost of production, and a continuing trend towards corporate consolidation and megadairies. This National Dairy Month, thank a dairy farmer by calling or emailing your legislators and asking them to give dairy farmers a secure future and support NFFC’s Milk from Family Dairies Act!

The Milk from Family Dairies Act (MFDA) is a sustainable, long-term solution to root causes of the US dairy crisis that has forced thousands of farmers out of business. The MFDA will reform dairy policy by ensuring fair prices for farmers and balancing supply with demand while protecting costs for consumers and revitalizing rural areas — all with the goal of saving taxpayers money! It’s time to give dairy farmers, and the rural communities who rely on them, a secure and prosperous future.

⚠️ Defend the Packers and Stockyards Act!

The Packers and Stockyards Act, a landmark law intended to protect farmers and ranchers from abusive and anti-competitive behavior, is under attack! Our food system is suffering from heavy vertical integration, with just a handful of corporations controlling a lion’s share of production in some of our most commonly used agricultural commodities. 102 farmer, rancher, consumer, labor, farmworker and faith organizations recently sent a letter urging the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations to remove a harmful bill rider that would allow abusing corporate conduct to continue unchecked. Personalize one of RAFI-USA’s ready-made action alerts and tell your representatives it’s time for a more just and equitable food system.

Farm & Food Policy Roundup

Increasing Land Access, Security, and Opportunities Act

40% of U.S. farmland is expected to change ownership over the next few decades. At the same time, accessing farmland is one of the top challenges for young and beginning farmers, and farmers from historically-underserved communities. NFFC is thrilled to endorse the Increasing Land Access, Security and Opportunities Act, which will expand the USDA’s Increasing Land, Capital, and Market Access Program! The program provides grants for locally led projects that help underserved producers gain land and market opportunities. This new legislation authorizes $100 million annually for the USDA program over the next decade, and increases outreach and funding availability.

Seeds and Breeds for the Future Act

The Seeds and Breeds for the Future Act promotes public research and development of regionally adapted seed varieties and animal breeds, helping farmers build resiliency in the face of increasing climate challenges and shrinking biodiversity. Localized, domestically produced seed varieties are hardier and often yield more, and support farmer adaptability to market disruptions. The Seeds and Breeds for the Future Act directs the USDA to invest at least $75 million each fiscal year for competitive research grants that support the development of regionally adapted seed varieties and animal breeds at public universities. NFFC has proudly endorsed this bill along with many allies and members.
