➜ The Farmland for Farmers Act (S. 2583)

Who do you want to control US farmland β€” the farmers who feed us and give back to their local communities, or multi-national corporations and financial investors seeking to extract profits? The Farmland for Farmers Act combats the corporate takeover of our food system by restricting future US farmland ownership and leasing by corporate investors.

Farmers looking to purchase farmland face steep competition from speculative investors, and young and beginning farmers name land access as their top challenge. High land prices tip the scales in favor of corporate buyers, who have millions or even billions of dollars in capital and can easily outbid independent producers. These investors often use methods that prey on farmers in financial crisis, encouraging rural landowners to give up their land in exchange for quick cash.

The Farmland for Farmers Act is an important legislative opportunity to protect farmers in the US from increasing land grabs!

➜ The Fair Credit for Farmers Act (S. 2668)

The Farm Service Agency (FSA), a public agency of the USDA, holds about 20% of all farm debt in the US. Many farmers and ranchers unable to obtain loans from private commercial lenders β€” especially small farm businesses and young, beginning, and historically-underserved farmers β€” depend on fair and equitable access to FSA loans to buy seeds, livestock, equipment and more.

The Fair Credit for Farmers Act significantly improves services offered by the FSA, strengthens farmer-borrower rights, and helps to prevent predatory and discriminatory lending practices. Strong FSA credit opportunities help farm businesses thrive and revitalize rural communities across America.

It’s time for our government to show their commitment to US farmers and ranchers by improving FSA lending services to be easier to access, fair, and transparent!
