Green Schoolyards

This past spring, CAL FIRE announced green schoolyards grants were available to protect the health, well-being, and educational opportunity of children most vulnerable to increasing temperatures and extreme heat across California. Canopy’s proposal was prepared in deep collaboration with Ravenswood City School District, and we are delighted to share as a grant awardee. Starting spring 2024, we will add nearly 300 trees to three Ravenswood City School District campuses.

Greening a school campus has tremendous long-term impact—improved cognitive development, greater focus, and higher academic achievement for children are linked with greener schoolyards. Through the schoolyard greening work and coordinated tree lessons, we are looking forward to growing another crop of future tree stewards who will lead the work to promote and expand a healthy and robust urban forest.

The Great Christmas Tree Debate

Row of trees on a Christmas tree farm

The holidays are just around the corner, and if you celebrate Christmas, you may be weighing your options for a tree. Although at Canopy we’re fans of the benefits cut and live trees provide as they’re growing, we know you may have other considerations.

Read our blog where we detail the pros and cons of real vs. artificial trees and offer sustainable ideas for decking the halls.

NeighborWoods Month

October is NeighborWoods month, an annual initiative by the Arbor Day Foundation, member organizations of the Alliance for Community Trees, and dedicated volunteers to take action to make their communities greener and healthier by planting trees — keeping their neighborhoods vibrant.

Thanks to all the volunteers this month who’ve helped us celebrate NeighborWoods month and successfully launch our fall planting season!

Keep an eye on our event calendar or email volunteer@canopy.org to learn how you can get involved.
