Spirit Week is Coming October 26-30!

Join our Second Harvest team as we celebrate the arrival of fall through our annual Spirit Week

  • Monday, October 26: Sports Day - Jerseys, hats, face paint, team colors, foam fingers — don’t just tell us who your team is. Make us know it.
  • Tuesday, October 27: Character Day - Come dressed as your favorite character. Movies, TV, books, cartoons — anything goes.
  • Wednesday, October 28: Decade Day - Everyone’s favorite. Pick your favorite decade — groovy ’70s, neon ’80s, ’90s throwbacks, Y2K vibes, or whatever era speaks to you. (2026 does not count as a decade!)
  • Thursday, October 29: Rock Your Favorite Color Day — Pick your favorite color and wear it proudly from head to toe. Bonus points for anyone who has hair to match.
  • Friday, October 30: Halloween Costume Day – No explanation needed!

We have a new partnership!

Second Harvest is partnering with PORCH Communities to help neighbors organize simple, recurring monthly food drives for participating local food assistance partners.

The model is easy: A volunteer neighborhood coordinator chooses a monthly collection date, neighbors leave requested shelf-stable foods outside their homes, and volunteers collect and deliver the donations to a participating nearby partner food pantry. PORCH provides the tools and guidance, and local partners identify the foods that will be most useful to the residents they serve.

For current Second Harvest volunteers, PORCH offers another way to put your time, relationships, and knowledge of your community to work—right where you live. You can organize a collection, invite your neighbors to participate, or help with monthly pickups and deliveries.

Doing the Right Thing Will Always Be the Answer

This summer, the Amazon Home Delivered meal pilot helped make sure children had reliable access to nutritious food when school was out. With the help of Food Bank team members and volunteers, Second Harvest distributed 137,068 meal boxes, providing enough food to support approximately 2,300 kids EACH WEEK. We were proud to be the first food bank that said “yes” to the pilot program, now in its second year, and the partnership has continued to grow thanks to Amazon’s incredible support.

When the project needed additional resources, Amazon stepped up with a $50,000 gift, helping us to meet the increased need and to continue providing food to children and families! We’re grateful to our partners at Amazon, No Kids Hungry, and the Carolina Hunger Initiative for their partnership—and to the many volunteers who helped pack boxes and make this work possible.Together, we showed what can happen when a community comes together to make sure kids have the food they need.

Volunteer Spotlight: Terry Kilgo

Meet Terry Kilgo! If you have ever been to our Greensboro location, you’ve probably already met her! Terry works on the Guest Services team there, helping greet and sign in all volunteers, pantry partners, donors, neighbors seeking food assistance, and guests.

She says it best herself, “Empathy and compassion are a huge part of the job that we have, treating each neighbor with respect and dignity. Our tagline says it all, 'Everyone deserves to eat,' " and I want to do all that I can to make that happen in my community. I’ve seen seniors and single-parent families struggle to make ends meet in today’s economy. Juggling between feeding the family, housing, buying prescription medications, and paying utility bills is overwhelming for a lot of folks in my area. Not including medical insurance, car payments, internet services, etc. Whatever I can do to help on my end by manning this desk is a real pleasure for me.”

Terry also runs We Are One at her church, one of our partner pantries. That’s how she came to work with Second Harvest-while picking up the food order for her own pantry, she saw a need and decided to step up! Terry, thank you for all the work you do to help our community!

Around Every Table, There Is a Story

This holiday season, Second Harvest is celebrating the people, traditions, and memories that bring us together around the table as part of our Hope for Every Table This Season campaign.

And we’d love to include yours.

Do you have a favorite holiday recipe or a tradition that simply has to happen every year? Maybe it’s a dish passed down through generations, something everyone expects you to bring, or a newer tradition that has found its place at your table.

Share your recipe or tradition with us, along with a few sentences about what makes it meaningful to you. Photos are welcome, too. We’ll feature a selection of stories from volunteers, staff, and partners throughout the holiday season across our social channels and in this publication.

Backstage Pass With Eric Aft

On this episode of Backstage Pass, Eric takes us behind the scenes to talk about food donations and how you can donate food right here at Second Harvest. From individual donations to larger community efforts, every contribution can help put good food where it’s needed most. 💚
