AAMC Releases 2019 'Report on Residents' With National, Mississippi Data
Data from a
survey recently released by the Association of American Medical Colleges
(AAMC) shows that more than 50% of Mississippi doctors who completed residency from 2009-18 are practicing in an medically-underserved area (MUA). Compare that to a national average of 23%. MUAs are defined as "having too few primary care providers, high infant mortality, high poverty, or a high elderly population."
The
survey also finds
that almost 56% of people completing a Mississippi family medicine residency in the years 2009-2018 are still practicing in Mississippi, just above the national average of 55%.
The survey found interesting results on
gender when it comes to specialty
. Among 12,398 Family Medicine residents surveyed, 53% were female - one of the highest representation of females among specialties.
