The Science of Sleep and School Start Times

Wednesday, November 19, 2025

Noon ET | 9:00 a.m. PT

Every morning, millions of teens wake up before their brains are ready to learn — and it’s taking a toll on their mental health, safety, and success. But what if one simple shift could change everything?

Join Dr. Rafael Pelayo, Stanford sleep expert and author of How to Sleep, for a one-hour masterclass that will change the way you think about teen sleep, learning, and health.

Dr. Pelayo will reveal the science behind why kids and teens are biologically wired to sleep later — and how aligning school schedules with their brains can boost academic success, mental health, and safety.

This is more than a talk — it’s a wake-up call for every community that cares about kids.

You'll learn:

  • How teen brain development and circadian rhythms affect sleep
  • The surprising link between sleep, mental health, and emotional resilience
  • What happens to teen health, safety, and school performance, including attendance when schools delay morning start times
  • How important it is for teens to get enough quality sleep at the right time
  • Practical, evidence-based tips to support healthy routines in schools and at home

Featured Speaker: Rafael Pelayo, MD FAASM

Dr. Pelayo is a clinical professor at Stanford University’s Sleep Medicine division, author of How to Sleep. He is the co-winner of the Sleep Research Society’s 2025 Public Service Award for his leadership in helping California become the first state in the nation to pass a law supporting adolescent sleep health by delaying school start times.

Since 1993 he has worked at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic treating patients of all ages. He teaches the popular Dement’s Sleep and Dreams to hundreds of Stanford students every year. He currently volunteers in leadership positions for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as chair of the Political Action Committee, vice-chair of the National Sleep Foundation, board of the directors for Start School Later, and is a past president of the California Sleep Society. He is originally from New York City where he started his sleep career as a medical student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
