Longfellow's First Student-Run Career Fair is in need of Speakers

My name is Cailin Reid. My friend June Shaller and I are planning a career fair at Longfellow Middle School, the middle school here in our neighborhood. We are in 8th grade and are working on our Silver Award, which is the second highest award in Girl Scouts. This award includes finding an issue in our community and finding a long-lasting solution. 

We wanted to address the issue of the lack of student motivation in middle school students so we decided to create an annual career fair at Longfellow Middle School to help motivate students. We chose to focus on Longfellow specifically because it is one of the more under-resourced middle schools in Berkeley, and I am a proud Longfellow student.

We are looking for people to inspire students at the career fair by volunteering to share information about your job there. By agreeing to come, you are helping out many middle school students! We hope to have a wide range of careers and as diverse a pool of people as possible, and are especially looking for BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and immigrants to present. 

The Career Fair will be at Longfellow Middle School on May 16 from 3:00 to 5:00. If you ARE able to make it, please fill out the form below: Longfellow Middle School Career Fair Sign-Up Sheet 

If you are NOT able to make it, please ask any colleagues if they could come so that we can get as many volunteers there as possible!

La primera feria profesional dirigida por estudiantes de Longfellow necesita oradores

Mi nombre es Cailin Reid. Mi amiga June Shaller y yo estamos planeando una feria profesional en la escuela secundaria Longfellow, la escuela secundaria aquí en nuestro vecindario. Estamos en octavo grado y estamos trabajando en nuestro Premio Plata, que es el segundo premio más alto en Girl Scouts. Este premio incluye encontrar un problema en nuestra comunidad y encontrar una solución duradera.

Queríamos abordar el problema de la falta de motivación de los estudiantes de secundaria, por lo que decidimos crear una feria profesional anual en Longfellow Middle School para ayudar a motivar a los estudiantes. Elegimos centrarnos en Longfellow específicamente porque es una de las escuelas intermedias con menos recursos en Berkeley y soy un estudiante orgulloso de Longfellow.

Hola familias de Longfellow,

Longfellow tendrá su segunda graduación annual Latinx el 31 de mayo de 2024. Raza Youth Concilio, facultad de la escuela y familias, han estado recaudando fondos para que este evento se realice. Raza Youth Concilio quisiera pedirle a la comunidad de Longfellow si nos podrian apoyar con este evento. Ocupamos voluntarios para para tres turnos diferentes: preparación para este evento (2:00 p. m. a 4:00 p. m.), calentar y servir comida (4:00 p. m. a 8:00 p. m.) y limpieza (7:00 p. m. a 9:00 p. m.). Hello Longfellow families, 

Longfellow will be hosting its 2nd Annual Latinx Graduation on May 31, 2024. Raza Youth Concilio, along with staff & families, have been fundraising to make this event happen. Raza Youth Concilio would like to ask the Longfellow community for volunteers for this event and anyone interested in cooking. Volunteers are needed for three different shifts: set up for this event (2pm-4pm), heating up food/serving food (4pm-8pm) and cleaning up (7pm-9pm).  If you would like support in cooking food, please contact me by email at rebecatorresavila@berkeley.net

Ethnic Studies Showcase: Celebrating our Legacy of Ethnic Studies in BUSD

When: Tuesday, May 7 from 5:00-7:00 PM

Where: Rosa Parks Elementary School, 920 Allston Way, Berkeley

At this showcase, attendees will:

• Learn more about what ethnic studies looks like in BUSD
• Preview some of the exciting curriculum
• Hear from a panel of students, Berkeley Unified Ethnic Studies educators, and Ethnic Studies experts
• Honor Berkeley community leaders whose stories are being included and uplifted in our pilot Ethnic Studies units
• Enjoy food, entertainment, and community

Lace up those shoes and dust off those wheels: Bike to School Day is BACK on Thursday, May 16, 2024!

Bike or Roll to School  for the first time or to renew a commitment to healthy and safe travel to school. Pick up your goodies at one of the Longfellow gates! 

This event is not just for bikes! All active modes — including scooters, skateboards, and roller skates — are encouraged. 

Bike to School Day is an event organized by Alameda County’s Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) Program, which is sponsored by the Alameda County Transportation Commission. For more information about the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools Program, visit our website.

City of Berkeley Recreation: Upcoming Events, Spring & Summer Camps

We still have some spots available. Kindly inform your families that the priority registration for low-income families will end on April 24th. If they wait until after the 24th, they will have to pay the general Berkeley residence fee of $20 per child/session. Therefore, it is advisable to encourage them to register as soon as possible. Additionally, if any families have fifth graders who will be going into sixth grade, we offer a free summer camp called Achievers for incoming 6th to outgoing 8th graders. Please find the attached registration form.
