AUGUST 4, 2026

August is here, and a new school year is just around the corner! Join us Sunday as we bless backpacks, welcome our rising kindergarteners with a promotion parade, worship together at The Table, and share lunch. This week’s newsletter also includes several meaningful ways to serve our children and neighbors, plus upcoming events for all ages.

THIS WEEK

HOLY COMMUNION & CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER

Wednesdays through September 2 | 6:30 p.m. | Chapel

Join us on Wednesday evenings for a quiet service of Holy Communion and contemplative prayer. This weekly service offers space to slow down, pray, and experience God’s presence in the middle of the week.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUNDAY

Sunday, August 9 | Worship at 8:30 & 11 a.m. | Lunch at 12 p.m.

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS

Celebrate the beginning of a new school year with a special Blessing of the Backpacks during both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services.

Students of all ages, from preschool through college and beyond, are invited to bring their backpacks to worship for a special blessing.

THE TABLE WORSHIP & LUNCH

At 11 a.m., join us for The Table, our intergenerational worship experience, followed by an all-church lunch at noon. Lunch is free, but donations are welcome. Please RSVP so we can plan accordingly.

KINDERGARTEN PROMOTION PARADE

Help us give our rising kindergarteners a big LHUMC welcome! Families may drop off their rising kindergarteners in their regular classrooms at 9:30 a.m. Then, at 9:45 a.m., our newest elementary students will parade from the Children’s Wing to the Great Hall, where the “big kids” will be waiting to welcome them. Parents and members of adult Sunday School classes are invited to line up at the back of the Great Hall to cheer loudly and help us celebrate this exciting milestone!

WAYS TO SERVE

VOLUNTEER IN CHILDREN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL

Our Children’s Ministry is looking for a few caring adults to help make Sunday mornings safe, welcoming, and meaningful for our kids. Whether you prefer supporting behind the scenes or leading a small group, there’s a role that fits your availability and comfort level.

BE AN EXTRA SET OF EYES

Help keep classrooms running smoothly during Sunday School by being present, attentive, and supportive. No teaching or preparation required, only your presence and care. Serving even once in a while makes a big difference.

LEAD A CHILDREN'S SMALL GROUP

Leading a small group is simple and impactful. You’ll guide a brief discussion using questions we provide, then close with prayer (no prep needed). A commitment of just 2–3 Sundays per semester helps create consistency and community for our kids.

You can support Feed Lake Highlands by donating items to their food pantry. Most-needed items include cereal; canned tuna, chicken, and other meats; mac and cheese; pasta sauce (no glass jars); toilet paper; and brown paper bags.
