🧠 Coaching Corner

Closing the Gap Between Intent and Experience

Children will often say to me, "But that's not what I meant."

I usually believe them.

Most children aren't trying to hurt someone's feelings or start an argument. They're telling me what their intent was.

But then I ask them to think about something else.

"What do you think the other child's experience might have been?"

Those are two very different questions.

As social coaches, we spend a lot of time helping children close the gap between what they intended to communicate and what another person actually experienced.

Sometimes a child was trying to be funny, but their friend felt embarrassed.

Sometimes a child was trying to help, but another child felt criticized.

And sometimes the opposite happens. A child assumes someone was being mean when the other child simply chose the wrong words or didn't explain themselves very well.

Communication is a shared responsibility.

Sometimes we need to help the speaker clarify their message. Other times, we need to help the listener consider another possible interpretation. Often, both children learn something.

That's why I encourage children to slow the conversation down instead of rushing to decide who was right.

Together, we explore both perspectives.

"What were you hoping the other person would understand?"

"What do you think they actually understood?"

Those two questions often uncover the misunderstanding much faster than arguing about who was right or wrong.

Coaching Tip: The next time your child tells you about a disagreement with a friend, try exploring both sides of the conversation.

Ask:

β€’ What were you trying to communicate?

β€’ What do you think your friend experienced?

Helping children consider both their own intent and another person's experience builds empathy, perspective-taking, and stronger communication. It also teaches an important lesson: when a conversation goes wrong, the goal isn't to winβ€”it's to understand each other a little better.

β˜€οΈ Summer Program 2026

ο»ΏOur Summer Social Coaching Program begins July 7th, and we're looking forward to another season of friendship-building, outdoor play, problem-solving, and real-world social coaching.

While several weeks are already full, a few openings are still available.

If you've been thinking about joining us this summer, there's still time. I'd be happy to help you determine which week might be the best fit for your child.

And if summer doesn't fit your family's schedule, our weekly social coaching groups will return in September, offering children ongoing opportunities to continue building these same skills throughout the school year.

πŸŽ’ Weekly Groups

While our weekly social coaching groups are enjoying a summer break, I'm already looking ahead to the 2026–2027 school year.

Weekly groups will resume in mid-September and provide children with ongoing opportunities to practice friendship skills, flexibility, conversation, problem-solving, self-advocacy, and social confidence in real time with peers.

Current families will begin hearing from me later this summer with group recommendations and scheduling information.

If your child is not currently enrolled and you'd like to learn more about joining a group this fall, I'd be happy to talk with you about whether one might be a good fit.

πŸ’¬ Individual & Family Coaching

Support is available for kids, parents, and families who could use help navigating social, emotional, behavioral, or school-related challenges.

Sometimes a little outside guidance can help bring clarity, confidence, and a plan for moving forward.

Sessions are available in person or virtually.

🎀 Workshops & Presentations

Workshops are available for schools, parent groups, and professional teams looking for practical, real-world strategies to support kids socially and emotionally.

Confidence in Skills β€” and in Social Communication

For families who need academic support alongside social coaching, I highly recommend working with Megan β€” someone I trust to support both learning and how kids express what they know.

Megan’s K–5 academic tutoring supports both neurotypical and neurodivergent learners with:

βœ… Reading, writing, and math

βœ… Executive functioning and organization

βœ… Gentle coaching around classroom communication and self-advocacy

Using a strengths-based, multimodal approach, Megan helps kids build confidence β€” not just in their skills, but in how they participate, communicate, and show up in the classroom.

❀️ Closing Thought

Every conversation has the potential to bring people closerβ€”or farther apart.

Sometimes all it takes to bridge the gap is one more question, one more explanation, or one more chance to understand each other.

When we teach children to consider both their own intent and another person's experience, we're doing more than helping them solve today's disagreement. We're giving them a skill they'll carry into friendships, classrooms, workplaces, and families for the rest of their lives.

Because strong relationships aren't built by always saying the perfect thing.

They're built by being willing to understand each other, even when the conversation doesn't go perfectly.

Have a wonderful week. ❀️
