Does Your Child Have a Recycle Bin?
One of the coaching tools I use with kids is something I call the Recycle Bin.
Kids can't control every thought that pops into their heads. None of us can. But they can learn that not every thought deserves to stay.
When a child says things like:
"Nobody likes me."
"I always mess everything up."
"I'm going to fail."
"I'll never make a friend."
I don't try to argue with the thought. Instead, I ask:
"Is that a Keep Thought or a Recycle Bin Thought?"
Suddenly, they have a choice.
Helpful thoughts—the ones that encourage us, solve problems, or remind us of the truth—are Keep Thoughts.
The thoughts that tear us down, convince us to give up, or predict the future without evidence belong in the Recycle Bin.
🧭 Coaching Tip: The next time your child says something unkind about themselves, pause before reassuring them. Ask, "Do you think that's a Keep Thought or a Recycle Bin Thought?" You might be surprised how quickly they begin to recognize the difference.
