How Can I Help?

I have a confession to make.

I am a fixer.

Tell me you have a problem, and there is a very good chance my brain is already three steps ahead, generating possible solutions. I’m pretty sure my own kids could provide references.

And I know I’m not alone.

When someone we care about is struggling, helping feels like doing something. So we offer suggestions. We tell them what we would do. We point out options they may not have considered. Sometimes we’re halfway through solving the problem before we’ve stopped to ask whether they even want our help solving it.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how different it feels to start with one simple question:

“How can I help?”

And then comes the harder part.

Listen to the answer.

Maybe they know exactly what they need. If they do, we don’t have to decide whether we think it’s the best solution. We can simply decide whether what they’re asking is something we’re able and willing to do.

But sometimes the answer is:

“I don’t know.”

For fixers like me, those three words can feel like an invitation to start problem-solving.

But maybe there’s another question to ask first:

“Would you like me to problem-solve with you?”

Now we’ve been invited in. We can offer ideas together instead of throwing solutions at someone who may not be ready for them.

And what if we problem-solve together and they still don’t know?

Maybe we say:

“That’s okay. I’ll be here if or when you need me.”

That may be the hardest part of all.

It means allowing someone we care about to have a problem we aren’t fixing. It means trusting that they may need time to figure out what comes next. It means remembering that support doesn’t always have to move someone toward a solution.

Sometimes support is simply letting someone know they don’t have to figure everything out right now—and that we’ll still be there when they’re ready.

Ask → Listen → Offer → Be There

Sometimes just being there is the help.

🎒 Weekly Social Groups

Our Weekly Social Coaching Groups are off to a great start this fall!

Through real play and real-time coaching, children build friendship skills, flexibility, confidence, and problem-solving in a warm, supportive environment.

Several groups are currently full or have very limited availability. If you’ve been considering a group for your child, you’re welcome to learn more and see whether there may be a good fit.

đź’¬ Individual & Family Coaching

Sometimes kids need a little more support than a group setting can provide—or a chance to work through something specific one-on-one.

Individual coaching can help children and families develop practical strategies for managing anxious thoughts, navigating friendships, handling frustration, building flexibility, and developing confidence.

Together, we identify what’s getting in the way and work on tools your child can actually use in everyday life, one small brave step at a time.

Sessions are available in person or virtually.

🎤 Workshops & Presentations

Workshops are available for schools, parent groups, and professional teams looking for practical, real-world strategies to support kids socially and emotionally.

Topics include relationship-based, real-time social coaching, behavior, friendship skills, anxiety, and practical strategies that translate directly into everyday interactions with children.

Presented virtually or in person.

Confidence in Skills — and in Social Communication

For families who need academic support alongside social coaching, I highly recommend working with Megan — someone I trust to support both learning and how kids express what they know.

❤️ Closing Thought

Before offering a solution this week, try asking one question first:

“How can I help?”

Then give the other person enough space to answer.

Sometimes the best help we can offer isn’t the help we imagined. ❤️
