What You Don't See on the Playground
If you watched one of our social coaching groups from across the playground, you might think the children were simply playing.
You'd see kids laughing, building forts, chasing each other, digging in the dirt, or making up games together. It would probably look effortless.
I see something very different.
I see a classroom.
I see a child deciding whether to be brave enough to walk over to a group.
I see another learning to wait just a little longer before interrupting.
I see someone figuring out how to recover after hearing "no."
I see a child beginning to recognize a friend's facial expression before the words are even spoken.
And I see dozens of moments that become opportunities to coach.
Most of those coaching moments last only a few seconds.
A reminder to wait.
An invitation to move a little closer.
A question instead of an answer.
A pause before stepping in.
Knowing when to help...
...and knowing when to simply watch.
Much of the work is invisible. By the time parents see children laughing and playing together, dozens of tiny coaching moments have already happened.
Over time, those quiet reminders don't stay my words. They become the child's own inner voice. Instead of needing someone to whisper, "Take one step closer," children begin saying it to themselves.
That's when I know the coaching is working.
๐งญ Coaching Tip: Social growth rarely comes from one big lesson. It grows through hundreds of small moments, gently coached at just the right time.
