Travel Etiquette for Americans Abroad: Tipping and Cultural Considerations

Traveling abroad is exciting, but navigating tipping and cultural customs is key to a smooth and respectful trip. This is especially important in destinations like Mexico and the Caribbean, where tipping is a significant part of the service industry.

Key Points:

  • Why Tipping Matters: In many all-inclusive resorts, staff work hard to provide excellent service. While "all-inclusive" may suggest gratuities are included, tipping for exceptional service, especially poolside or beachside, is customary and appreciated.

  • Tipping with Dollars: Bring small denominations of U.S. dollars ($1, $5, $10) for easy tipping. Tip $1-$2 per round of drinks, $2-$5 for housekeeping daily, and $5-$10 for special requests.

  • Cultural Etiquette: Learn basic phrases, be mindful of your volume, dress appropriately, and respect local customs. Research cultural practices beforehand to avoid unintentional faux pas.

  • Benefits of Tipping: Generous tipping shows gratitude and directly supports the livelihoods of resort staff, often leading to even better service.

Pro Tip: Get small bills from your bank before your trip and keep them readily accessible.

Understanding the ETIAS

Planning a trip to Europe? Here's what you need to know about the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)!

Starting in mid-2025, ETIAS will require travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the US and UK, to obtain a travel authorization before entering the Schengen Area.

The application process is straightforward: complete an online form, upload a passport photo, and pay a small fee (around €7). Most applications will be processed within minutes, and the authorization will be valid for three years.

Don't forget to apply through the official ETIAS website to avoid scams and ensure a smooth travel experience.

Happy travels! 🌍✈️

In Other News...

  • Real ID: Are you ready for Real IDOn May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.

  • Starting January 8, 2025, travelers from 49 non-European countries, including the United States and Canada, must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit the United Kingdom. This new requirement aims to streamline the UK's immigration system, making it quicker and more secure for millions of visitors each year. Happy Clients

Hi Denise:

Everything went well! All the pre-registration stuff really helped, even though it was not the easiest to get through. Yes, they asked for the etickets both ways.

Restaurants were great - maybe some of the best we had. Definitely more options since the last time there. Rooms were good. Service was great, but less English than Mexico. Someone who doesn't speak Spanish may have a harder time if used to Mexico. Beach is one of the nicest - soft sand and bluer waters than Mexico.

Thank you for all your help on this trip!

Trivia Answer: C) Madrid, Spain

The world’s oldest continuously operating restaurant is Restaurante Sobrino de Botín, located in Madrid, Spain.

Established in 1725, it holds the Guinness World Record for its longevity. This historic eatery is renowned for its traditional Castilian cuisine, particularly its roast suckling pig (cochinillo asado), cooked in a wood-fired oven that has been in use since its opening.

The restaurant has been a cultural landmark in Madrid, attracting figures like Ernest Hemingway, who mentioned it in his novel The Sun Also Rises. Its enduring charm lies in its ability to preserve history while serving up timeless Spanish dishes in an authentic setting.
