$50,000 Matching Grant now LIVE

It was fitting that on National Arbor Day last Friday, a number of wonderful volunteers joined us at the Canopy office to stuff and stamp letters mailed to many of you, continuing our campaign in support of the Catherine Martineau Legacy Fund. Thank you to our generous donors who have responded quickly in honor of Catherine’s vision. Will you join them and give generously (and be matched!) to secure Canopy’s critical work?

Your contribution will fund Canopy’s ongoing work to:

  • Respond to the recent devastating storms by sharing information and resources with the community and helping shape tree management practices that create a resilient urban forest and protect residents in future storms;
  • Plant and steward trees where they are needed the most, taking care to select the right tree for the right place;
  • Nurture youth as environmental leaders, including through paid urban forestry internships like Canopy’s Teen Urban Forester program;
  • Expand tree-based lessons for K-12 students, sparking curiosity among kids of diverse learning styles, ages, cultures, and backgrounds;
  • Equip residents as urban forest stewards through programs like Community Forestry School, family-friendly events, and tree care guides created by local experts;
  • Advocate to local governments for policies, practices, and programs that leverage tree and other nature-based solutions to foster climate resilience and environmental equity.

Please join us in thanking and celebrating Catherine for 18 years of exceptional leadership as we continue growing a brighter, tree-filled future for all.

16 Years of Growth: the East Palo Alto Tree Initiative sound wall project

East Palo Alto sound wall trees

Sixteen years ago, Canopy launched the East Palo Alto Tree Initiative by planting close to 900 trees along the Highway 101 sound wall in partnership with the City of East Palo Alto and Cal Fire. These drought-tolerant trees — planted on four stretches of the sound wall along East and West Bayshore road, totaling 2.1 miles of roadway between San Antonio and Willow — have increasingly filtered particulate pollution and noise from the busy highway traffic and greatly benefited the health of nearby residents.

Saturday morning the illustrious Dave Muffly, Board Certified Master Arborist and former Canopy board and staff member, led the Teen Urban Foresters on a site tour, sharing the history of the project, his experience designing this ambitious planting, and how this humble Canopy planting informs larger-scale projects.

Thank you to Dave for sharing his expertise today and 16 years ago!

Volunteer with Canopy this summer!

This summer Canopy volunteers will be resuming our Citizen Science Projects: The Great Oak Count and the Young Tree Care Survey. These two Palo Alto projects give teen and adult volunteers a chance to survey native oaks or young trees, learn more about our urban canopy, and enjoy the outdoors with friends.

Contact Indira at volunteer@canopy.org to participate.
