Red heart in blue box for GivingTuesday.

In 2024, over $62 million was raised for Canadian charities on GivingTuesday, with more than 6 million Canadians participating.

As GivingTuesday approaches, here is this year's charity list. Karma & Cents clients, along with Place2Give Foundation donors contributed funds to these organizations.

Giving Tuesday

In this newsletter you will find stories about some of these donations including a behind-the-scenes visit to STARS Air Ambulance; the creation of a full-length documentary film about a donor and his passion; and resources for you and your family to use as you explore your holiday giving this year.

All the best for the holidays,

Give A Mile - A Place2Give Case Study

Twelve years ago Kevin Crowe launched the Give A Mile (GAM) DAF on Place2Give. Since then, GAM has become it's own charity helping hundreds of people reunite for end-of-life moments.

This year, Kevin's foundation released a full-length documentary, "The Journey to Give a Mile." It follows his race across the Yukon arctic tundra as he takes part in the world's coldest, most grueling race in order to raise awareness about the charity and bring more people together in their dying days.

This question guides the whole team at Karma & Cents and Place2Give Foundation. #GivingTuesday is a day for giving back and we’re so proud to be a part of it! We exist to support advisors and donors along their philanthropic journey. Check out our #GivingTuesday Donor Guide featuring the 2025 Charity List.

My Giving Story

In August 2022 Gena's father, Isaac Rotstein, passed away from a short battle with cancer. Since then his legacy has been carried forward by friends and family through a variety of initiatives.

Most recently, the Parks Foundation Calgary received a donation from Isaac's cycling buddies to put in a bench at a local park.

This example of friends pooling resources is one of the 4 T's - Ties. Every philanthropist has four distinct assets that they bring to every funder-grantee conversation: Time (volunteering), Talent (expertise), Treasures (money) and Ties (network). Not all donations are purely financial. In fact, the most impactful ones combine funding with another one of the 4T's.

Deborah Goldstein

Have you Asked a Good Question Today? A Daughter's Reflections on her Father's Legacy

Over the years Karma & Cents has worked with Enlightened Philanthropy's Deborah Goldstein on a variety of family philanthropy projects. In this podcast by StoryKeep, a Toronto based media house that designs and creates legacy videos and podcasts, Deborah reflects on the life and legacy of her father, Gersham Goldstein—a brilliant tax attorney, a natural storyteller, and a man whose love for good questions shaped those around him. Through personal memories, a moving archival recording of her father’s voice, and a deep exploration of philanthropy, Deborah shares how his influence lives on in her own work guiding families to align their giving with their values.

This episode is about memory, meaning, and the unexpected ways life’s small moments—like a hitchhiked ride or a well-placed question—can change everything. Listen now for an inspiring reflection on love, loss, and legacy.

Trends in Philanthropy: Collaborative Funding Models

Reposted with permission from Sagard Wealth.

As the philanthropic landscape evolves, a growing number of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) are trading top-down donation models for participatory, community-driven approaches. Giving circles, venture philanthropy, marketplace giving, pooled funds and mega-philanthropic initiatives offer donors an avenue to engage deeply, collaborate meaningfully, and drive strategic impact—while challenging traditional norms of wealth and influence in philanthropy.

Continuing from the original article published in July 2025, we explore how funder collaborations are shaping Canada’s charitable sector.
