The year 2020 has been crazy, but Kingman Museum has one more big challenge before the year is over.
As we’ve spent time going through the collections this summer, it’s apparent the current building on Limit Street is a hostile environment to storing artifacts.
The building has become increasingly problematic and requires expensive maintenance and improvements.
We risk permanent damage to Kingman’s irreplaceable items unless we move the collections to a safer storage location this winter.
In partnership with the Battle Creek Community Foundation, we’ve found suitable locations for storage and will be hiring professional movers.
The moving process is difficult, not only with the usual headaches of packing things up, but also cataloging individual items to ensure they are easy to find when they are temporarily warehoused.
Fortunately, we have an amazing staff. They’re dedicating extra time to protect the collections so we can ensure these items continue to be an educational resource for the community.
As we move forward with deciding next steps, we'll keep you in the loop. Our goal is to keep these unique items -- from the polar bear to the meteorite -- in the community for years to come.
The collections debuted 150 years ago at Battle Creek Central High School and are now being preserved for our next 150 years.
