In this season of giving thanks, the library staff is grateful now that the work, multiple moves, hosting of temporary offices, and service disruptions of the remodel are mostly done and the pandemic lockdowns are over. Students, staff, and faculty are back on campus and our new spaces invite all to study, meet, and relax.

And the name of the Library coffee lounge is…
a work in progress. J Students, staff and faculty submitted 139 entries to the naming contest, which began on October 18, 2021, when we opened the coffee lounge. On that day, we held a random drawing of a student present at the opening to receive the First Cup of Coffee served in a Parkside mug by the chancellor. Marcedes Campbell was the lucky winner, and so she, Chancellor Ford, and the library director cut the construction tape. Rangers shared cake, lined up for free coffee, played coffee pong, and admired the new space.

A café space in the library has been the dream of generations, and it is finally a reality in a wonderful remodeled space with comfortable furniture, internet and power connectivity, and beautiful design. A computer lab, open to all with PCs, Macs, and presentation technology lies next to the space.
When will we have a name? A naming team, including the Wyllie Remodel core team, dining services staff, and library staff meet today to create a short list for a campus vote to follow. Watch your inbox for your chance to vote!

The library will continue to serve free coffee for finals week. Since its opening in this location in 1972, the library has served free coffee and snacks during finals study days and sometimes midterms each semester until the pandemic finals week of 2020 stopped us. But this December, there will be coffee! Stay tuned for days and hours.

We held our book sale again!
Besides finally coffee, another library tradition has returned. We held the annual library book sale last week Wednesday through Friday for the first time in our own space, due to the remodel work going on in Main Place, our normal venue.
Campus community members and visitors could buy donated and culled books at fantastic prices, including the Friday morning dollar-per-bag sale and the Friday afternoon please-take-anything-you-want-for-free sale. The Library netted $1338, which goes directly to our collections budget to pay for current material. Thanks to all who stopped by! See you this time next year.

The Archives has moveable shelves!
In addition to the more visible dream of coffee in the library comes the fulfillment of the quieter, subterranean aspirations of decades of archivists: moveable compact shelving. The shelving will accommodate nearly 100% more material than the stationary and improperly sized shelves of the past. The infrastructure work taking place below the floor of the archives made this a perfect time to install the new floor and rails for the moveable shelves. We will host an open house when a few more projects are complete so everyone can admire the shelves. In the meantime, the archives will open to visitors and students as soon as infrastructure work in the D2 lobby allows—hopefully before the end of the semester.

Spooky Dogs await!
If you enjoy escape rooms, the library has a spooky dog themed escape room available now! Groups of two to five are ideal. There is a 25-minute time limit, so the activity won’t take much of your day. Email libraryevents@uwp.edu to arrange a weekday time slot between 9 and 6 p.m. from Now until Tuesday, November 16th.
Why try an escape room? They foster team-building and lateral thinking, and the technique can be used to teach methods and content. This one is simply fun. All campus citizens may compete for prizes!
Unfortunately, we have not yet welcomed back the decidedly not spooky therapuppies we generally employ. We will fetch them for finals if they are available.

Native American Heritage Month and More!
Come through the silvery gates to see our monthly heritage/history display, curated by Liz Antaramian. The area now features resources related to Native American Heritage Month. While you are here, see the new book display, graphic novels, video games, and more. Head of Collections Dina Kaye recently completed a diversity audit of our children’s book collection using Diverse Bookfinder’s Collection Analysis Tool. We have enhanced that collection with many new and engaging titles. Check them out for your family to enjoy!

Science Night | Using Math to Predict Disease Trends

Gain an understanding on how the application of mathematical principles can be used to predict trends in the spread of infectious diseases and the variables which influence their spread. The results are shocking!
Research was conducted using mathematical modeling to assess trends in the spread of COVID-19 under the guidance of Dr. Pirooz Mohazzabi of the UW-Parkside Mathematics and Physics Department.

New Resources Available!
Recently, Dr. Jullian Kinzie, Associate Director, Center of Post-Secondary Research and the NSSE Institute, shared with UW System colleagues that nationally there has been a 53 % increase among first generation students indicating mental and emotional exhaustion.
To provide support for faculty and staff interacting with students who may be experiencing distress, Student Health and Counseling has created a “virtual “red folder to serve as a quick reference guide to help staff recognize, respond and refer students as necessary.

Welcome to the 2021 United Way Campaign
When the UW-Parkside community comes together, there is nothing we can’t accomplish. Whether it’s helping to graduate the largest class in UW-Parkside’s history or working on capital projects to improve our facilities, our employees consistently go above and beyond to meet and exceed our goals. We know that same dedication and generous spirit reaches beyond campus and that is why this year’s United Way campaign theme is “United in UW-Parkside Pride.” Your contributions provide resources that help local nonprofit organizations close equity gaps in health, financial well-being and education for members of our community.
We are proud that UW-Parkside’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion has helped launch the brand new Ranger Reader employee volunteer program in partnership with the United Way of Kenosha County. One child at a time, UW-Parkside reading tutors will help elementary students improve their reading scores so they can succeed in school and in the future.
