This past Sunday Deacon Tucker prepared his sermon using the First Book of Homilies. Huh? What's that? We know that the Bible has 1st Samuel, 1st Kings, etc., but "1st Homilies?"
Lee Gatis, editor of the First Book of Homilies in Modern English, writes, "How do we know what the Church of England believes? One crucial way is to look at the teaching contained in its foundational documents. These include the Thirty-Nine Articles, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordinal. But less well-known than these are the two books of Homilies – published sermons for clergy to preach to their congregations in the early years of the English Reformation.
