Who MATCHED into Family Medicine?

This past Friday, March 20, was MATCH Day for fourth-year medical students across the country. With the coronavirus pandemic, MATCH Day ceremonies were cancelled, so here's what we know from Mississippi's 2 medical schools and 5 family medicine residency programs (FMRPs).

At UMMC, 14 out of 143 matching students (10%) matched into family medicine, and at William Carey, 27 matched to family medicine out of 98 matching students (28%). Of the 41 total Mississippi students who matched into family medicine, 16 of those will stay at one of Mississippi's 5 family medicine residency programs.

April's Spring Fling POSTPONED

The officers of the MAFP have responsibly voted to postpone the MAFP Spring Conference and Spring Fling scheduled for April with the CDC urging a halt to gatherings of more than 10 people for the next 8 weeks.

We will notify you as soon as the meeting is rescheduled. This may take some time as we don’t know when our lives will be back to normalcy. If you have made your own room reservations, please call The Hilton Jackson at 601-957-2800 and cancel your room.

Apply to Be a MAFP Board Member - Deadline Extended to 4/1

MAFP has extended its deadline to April 1 for students and residents to apply for its Resident Board Member and Student Board Member spots. Student and Resident Board members are voting members of MAFP's Board of Directors, its governing body, and the MAFP Foundation Board of Directors, which oversees fund raising. MAFP will announce later how elections will be held, since elections are usually held at Spring Fling.

Residents: Certification Info From American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM)

Many residents have questions about American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) certification. T he ABFM put out a statement on March 20 with details , and the following is from Dr. Elizabeth Baxley, Executive Vice President of ABFM: "Residents are all board-eligible when they graduate. Employers accept board-certified or board-eligible out of residency. In fact, we are the ONLY specialty board that offers the initial certifying eam prior to graduation. And there are residents who are off-cycle, for a variety of reasons, who simply choose to take the exam in November or later. Historically, this examination was offered in July for most of its history, with scores not being provided for 8 weeks or more. It did not impact credentialing or jobs. Our desire would be to offer this examination before graduation, but that simply is not possible this year. The test centers have closed and will likely extend those dates. ... We are focusing our energy on trying to get thousands of exam seats for July/August, if possible, so we can still offer two exam delivery periods in 2020, if the pandemic evolution allows. I also am encouraging anyone who asks me about ABFM requirements that we are very sensitive to what family physicians are facing, and will be facing in the coming days. We prefer that certification is not what is on their minds at this time." The ABFM's Phoenix Newsletter, Feb. 2020
