Worry Worms: A Crochet Kindness Project

Have you ever heard of worry worms? They are cute, colorful crochet creatures designed to help people cope with stress, anxiety, and worry. They are also part of a global movement called Random Acts of Crochet Kindness, which aims to spread joy and comfort to strangers through handmade gifts.

The Deacons of Allen Park Presbyterian Church are inspired by this movement and want to start a Random Acts of Worry Worm Kindness project in our area. We want to make and distribute 1,000 worry worms to community members who need extra love and support. We believe these small gestures can make a big difference in someoneโ€™s day.

But we canโ€™t do it alone. We need your help! Hereโ€™s how you can get involved:

  • Donate yarn. We need all kinds of yarn, even scraps, to make our worry worms. You can drop off your yarn donations now using the donation box at the church.
  • Crochet worry worms (at home or in groups!): If you know how to crochet, you can use this free pattern (or find a great pattern and share it with us!): https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/worry-worms. You can also find video tutorials on YouTube which are helpful. You can make as many as you want at home and bring them to the church when they are done, or we can have worry worm crochet gatherings and make them together!
  • If you know someone that can crochet, please share this information and email them! Someone may be looking for a great project like this.
  • Glue eyes on worry worms. If you donโ€™t know how to crochet, you can still help by gluing eyes on the finished worry worms. We have googly eyes and glue available at the church for you.
  • Teach or learn crochet. If you want to learn how to crochet or teach others how to crochet, we will arrange a time to get together in July or August for a crochet workshop. All skill levels are welcome. Bring your hooks and yarn. We are especially looking for someone to teach others how to crochet!
  • Distribute worry worms. When we have a lot of worry worms, we will share them with our community. You can pick some worry worms and put them in places where people can find them. Each worry worm will have a note of kindness from us. You can also hand them to someone who needs some cheer, like a buddy, a person next door, a teacher, a nurse, a cashier, a stranger, etc.

To celebrate our project and thank everyone who participated, we will have a worry worm pizza party at the end of summer or early fall. We will enjoy pizza and drinks and share stories and photos of our worry worm adventures!

We hope you will join us in this crochet kindness project and help us spread some happiness and hope with our worry worms. Together, we can improve our community one worm at a time!

Although we don't have a clear idea of the appearance of our worms or the content of our note, these photos serve as an idea of what we are doing. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions to help us kickstart this project. I'm Kerri Van, Moderator of the Deacons. You can email or call/text me at 734-552-7628.
