Students of the Month

Wendy, 7th grade

Rolling Hills Middle School

After showing tremendous academic growth, Wendy has been selected as our Student of the Month for May! Wendy is a 7th grade student attending Rolling Hills Middle School. She has been dedicated to her weekly online tutoring sessions to improve her grades. Wendy is a responsible student and emphasizes the importance of her education by always being on time, prepared, and ready to work. She is kind and respectful to everyone and will put in the extra time to make sure her work is complete. Working closely with her tutor, Faith, Wendy has shown change not only in her academics but, her overall confidence as well. Distance learning has had its challenges, nevertheless, Wendy persevered. Wendy thanks Faith for being her biggest support through it all. Her favorite thing about Youth N.O.W. is the relationship she has been able to build with Faith. When it comes to her future career plans, Wendy is still exploring her options. We believe she will be successful in whatever she decides to do. We are so happy to have Wendy as part of our Youth N.O.W family! Congratulations Wendy!

Maliyah, 12th grade

Watsonville High School

Our high school Student of the Month is Maliyah! Her tutor, Ally, had some great things to say about her: Maliyah has grown considerably since the school year started. She actively participates in our tutoring sessions, articulates what she doesn’t understand, and makes it clear when she gets the concept. Her self confidence has improved greatly as she has seen over and over that she can understand and do the work successfully. The main thing I’ve noticed is that Maliyah takes responsibility for herself. She puts in the time and energy to manage her life. I see this with her school work, academic career and sports, which are all related for her. She plays softball at school and in a league. She also participates in AVID at school which teaches her skills for succeeding in college and her career. Maliyah maintains a very busy schedule and devotes a lot of energy into succeeding. She uses a variety of resources in both school and sports that are helpful like: tutoring, teacher office hours, private athletic training, and a coach mentor. She has leveraged her sports ability to get a college scholarship as well. All in all I am tremendously impressed with her determination and her efforts to not only succeed academically and in sports but, rather to make good choices for herself. I admire Maliyah’s dedication and willingness to devote energy to learning. Congratulations Maliyah!
