October Prayer Intention

For all those facing grief that is new and heavy.

Lord, the loss of someone we love is so overwhelming in the early days, weeks,
and months. It doesn't matter if the death was sudden or expected.
We lift up all those who are in the early days of grief; please be present
to them with your healing love.

Embracing the season of grief

Fall is a season of letting go. We say goodbye to the beauty of summer — the flowers, the green leaves and the warmth of longer days — and gently welcome a new season. The trees offer us a beautiful reflection of grief. Before they let go of their leaves, they surround us with breathtaking colors. Then, one by one, the leaves fall, allowing the trees to rest, deepen their roots and prepare for a new season.

For me, fall beautifully represents the journey of grief. As we walk through the season of grief, we, too, reflect on what was beautiful and precious. We remember the people we love, the moments we shared, the laughter, the traditions and the memories that have become part of who we are.

Sometimes, however, those memories can also bring feelings of regret, guilt and the painful “what ifs.” We may find ourselves thinking about what we wish we had done differently or what we wish we could change. While we cannot change what happened, we can choose what we carry forward.

Perhaps this season is an invitation to gently let go of some of the heavy things we have been carrying — the guilt, the regrets, the questions without answers — and make room for the things that remind us of love.

Because love does not end when someone dies. The relationship changes, but the love remains.

As you move through this season, consider giving yourself permission to remember. Look through photographs. Listen to a favorite song. Prepare a treasured recipe. Visit a meaningful place. Tell a story about your loved one. Light a candle. Write a letter to the person you miss. Spend time with someone who understands.

Most importantly, allow yourself to receive comfort in knowing that you were loved, you are loved, and the love you shared continues to be a part of your life.

Grief is not about forgetting. It is about learning how to carry the love and the memories forward as we create a new life balance.

Like the trees, we may need seasons of rest. We may need to deepen our roots, lean on others and give ourselves permission to grow at our own pace. There is no timetable for grief, and there is no “right” way to grieve.

As we enter this season, I invite you to ask yourself:

What do I want to gently release?

What do I want to hold close?

What brings me comfort, peace and even moments of joy?

How can I honor the love that will always be a part of my story?

At COJ, we are honored to walk alongside you. I hope you will join us at

one of our many adult grief support sessions this month as we journey together toward hope, strength and healing. You do not have to walk this journey alone.

Paying hope forward

As this season unfolds, we also look ahead to our annual Morning of Hope Breakfast fundraiser on Thursday, November 12, at Cooper Creek in Blue Ash.

This event is a beautiful opportunity to hear the stories of children, teens, adults and families whose lives have been touched by COJ. Their stories remind us why this work matters so deeply.

Morning of Hope 2025

If COJ has walked alongside you or someone you love during a difficult

season of grief, we invite you to join us. And if COJ has been a source of hope, strength and healing for you, would you consider paying it forward?

Your generosity helps make it possible for COJ to continue providing grief support at no charge to the bereaved, ensuring that a child, teen, adult or family does not have to face the death of someone they love alone.

Your gift can become part of someone else's story of hope — just as someone else's generosity may have helped COJ be there for you.

This fall, as we watch the leaves gently let go, may we remember that letting go does not mean letting go of love. We carry the love with us. We carry the memories with us. And we carry the hope that we are never alone.

With love and hope,

Adult Groups'

October Focus:

Letting Go & Holding On

Autumn is a season of transition from warmth and growth toward the colder months of winter rest. Just as trees shed their leaves for the coming winter, our grief asks us to examine what we are carrying and decide what to release to lighten our load.

Autumn leaves

We invite you to join us as we look at the gentle art of letting go of the heavy, painful leaves that do not support our healing journey, while deeply rooting oureslves in the things we want to keep – loving memories, lessons in resilience, and the new strengths we are uncovering within ourselves. All are welcome, and please invite a friend who may need support!

SELF-CARE CORNER

Body scans belong in your toolbox

Body scans are a helpful item to have in your self-care toolbox. Do you ever notice that feelings tend to show up in different parts of your body? Some people notice tight shoulders or necks when they are feeling stressed. Others notice loss of sleep or a poor appetite when they are having a hard time.
