THURSDAY WITH THE LEAGUE – OCTOBER 7
Protecting Voter Rights
What is voter suppression? What has occurred at both the federal and state levels to challenge the right to vote? What is the effect of the voting laws recently passed in several states, and what groups are most affected by these laws? What other activities are undermining voter rights? What might happen in California, and what can we do to restore and secure the franchise for all?
President’s Message

Happy Latinx Heritage Month! In a time of polarized politics, culture wars, xenophobia, and irrational fear of the “other,” it’s good to remember that we are all worth celebrating in all our diversity.
One Person, One Vote

Using the new census data, California is redrawing congressional, state senate, and assembly districts—right now. Los Angeles County is redrawing our supervisorial districts—right now. Your city and school districts are redrawing district lines—right now. What can you do to ensure that the communities we serve, including your community, get equal representation?
Caravan for Choice

LWV-PA is participating in the Pasadena Caravan for Choice, Saturday, October 2, at 9:30 a.m. This is an opportunity for those who wish to actively express support for freedom of choice to join a COVID-19-safe local group demonstration. Participants will be provided with "Freedom to Vote, Freedom to Choose" car magnets; to request one, email [email protected]. We will email details on picking one up at our office at 65 S. Grand Avenue, Pasadena, on the morning of the Caravan.
New Water Subcommittee

The Natural Resources Committee is forming a Water Subcommittee in cooperation with the Beach Cities League and the L.A. County Interleague Organization’s Water & Infrastructure Group (WIG). Each month we will discuss an issue of regional interest with an emphasis on water, starting October 14—and you are invited! Contact Kathy Kunysz at [email protected] for a link.
Getting to Affordable Housing
The League has been busy on the housing front for the past several months. Using our newly updated Housing Position as a framework, we are part of two local coalitions to address the issues of housing affordability.

Decarbonize Your Building, Decarbonize Your Life
Ben Stapleton, Executive Director, U.S. Green Building Council–L.A.
Would you like to know more about one important action that cities can take to combat climate change? Attend the virtual November Thursday with the League, sponsored by the Natural Resources Committee, to learn all about it!
PHS Voter Registration Drive
During lunch hour at Pasadena High School our newest student members—Amelia Monsour, Destiny Bowman, and Reyna Gonzalez—joined LWV-PA members in registering students to vote and answering their questions. The activity was conceived, organized, and run entirely by our student members with the school’s Future Voters of Pasadena Club and school support. Our future is in good hands.

Recall Election Results
In the recent recall election, Governor Newsom held on to his office as state governor. Where does L.A. County stand in voter turnout? Here’s where to track the final results.
October Units

Unit meetings take place in smaller virtual settings to empower, encourage, inform, and uplift. Come join the Units each month except for June, July, August, and December. Contact Unit Chairs for meeting details.

Board Retreat Summary

The LWV-PA Board of Directors met virtually via Zoom in August to hold their Annual Retreat. Here is a summary of developments and decisions.

Call for Press Release Coordinator!

The League is in urgent need of a volunteer to act as Press Release Coordinator to write press releases and notify news outlets of upcoming League events and activities, working in tandem with the LWV-PA President and Communications Committee Chair. This is an exciting opportunity to bring your talents to bear and get to know your League!

Book Corner: Woman of No Importance

An amazing nonfiction thriller of a biography, this is the herstory of an American spy during World War II—a woman, an amputee, and an other-abled risk taker who stared down both danger and misogyny.
Celebrating Latinx Heritage

As varied and multicultural as America itself, Hispanics or Latinx include those who self-identify with a broad range of traditions that extend far beyond the Eurocentric terms used to refer to them. Here we offer a few thoughts on who and what we celebrate in this National Hispanic Heritage Month. In a way, we are celebrating diversity itself!
Grapevine
News from your League committees. Read about the current activities of LWV-PA’s committees and learn what they need from you. You are always welcome to join or just sit in. Meetings remain virtual and accessible from home. Committee membership is both rewarding and fun, and it does the good work for which the League is known. So come and join in!
