Caps with tassels, long graduation gowns, balloons, flowers, and many photos are all signature parts of graduation. This year I have the distinct privilege of being the parent of a college graduate while also walking across the stage to receive the final degree - my PhD. Graduation excitement in our house has been pretty high yet that’s not where it started.
If I’m being fully transparent, I didn’t want to participate in my graduation ceremony but I was totally on board to celebrate our Florida State University graduate. You see, all of the travel logistics for our large family typically fall under my “mom duties”. Two graduations in one week in two different states … just another thing to plan and coordinate… Not interested! I am so grateful God does not turn away in disinterest or fatigue. In fact, Philippians 1:6 reminds us, “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ”.
I couldn’t be more elated to have gone to both graduation ceremonies - not because we got to hear all of the wonderful speeches (insert sarcasm here) but because of the time spent with family and friends. The laughter, the memories we made, and the new bonds created are a family treasure. God rejoices over us when we are restored to relationship with Him so I have to imagine He enjoys when we get along with one another too.
Graduations and family gatherings are opportunities to celebrate one another, show up for each other and rejoice in recent educational accomplishments.
Even though we may have moments of uncertainty, God shows up.
So to all the graduates from VPK to PhD…Congratulations! Enjoy your celebration and remember, God has plans for you!
