Dear Members and Friends,
This Thursday is our Health and Safety Forum. As always we look forward to hearing what's happening in health and safety in our industry. We have two great speakers to talk about SafeStart and the legal challenges due to the legalization of marijuana. Register if you haven't already.
Wednesday marks the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. I thought I would research any new pieces of information I might not already know by this point. I found some interesting tidbits which are shared below.
It's hard not to picture where you were when the first plane hit. I would imagine many of us were are work. I was busy working on a proposal and had a tight deadline so I wasn't able to find out what was going on outside my door. I just heard gasps and oh my gosh comments etc. After learning of it I had to just get back to it while co-workers hunkered around the conference tv. I do recall feeling unsafe as no one knew if there were more targets. Our world changed drastically that day. I flew a year later to pick up my daughter from Guatemala where she was adopted from and learned quickly how different flying was, plus was still hesitant to fly anywhere. Below are additional facts I found and please honor all of those who've suffered the tragedy and honor our heroes.
September is also suicide prevention month. Please be aware of signs of suicide as you may be able to save a life just by asking how your friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor etc. is doing today. Suicidal individuals often feel no one cares about them and they don't matter. There are so many resources and we made sure to have them here for you.
Here's to a great week for all of you and remember to look out for each other! Be safe and be supportive.
Cheers,
Kelly Jackson

Six Years of Transformation
| |
In the spring of 2018, SLCCC found itself in need of new leadership following the retirement of its President. At the time, Kelly Jackson was running her own marketing, design, and web agency when she was approached by the Board to step into the role of Executive Director.
Kelly accepted the position and officially began on September 4th. Little did anyone know, this marked the start of a challenging yet rewarding journey, including not just the transition in leadership after 27 years but also the unforeseen challenges of a global pandemic.
Over the past six years, Kelly has made an extraordinary impact. Under her

guidance, SLC3 has hosted 131 events, welcomed 176 new organizations into its membership, built a new staff, led a complete rebranding (SLC3), redesigned the website and CRM, and overhauled operations, committees, and marketing communications.
Through her leadership, SLC3 has solidified its reputation as the premier AEC industry organization in the region, excelling in continuing education, top-tier events, and valuable resources like its newsletter, blog, and collaborations on DEI and industry safety issues.
Since Kelly’s arrival, the organization has nearly doubled in size and tripled its event offerings. Her efforts have been instrumental in navigating through onboarding challenges, the disruption of Covid-19, and the evolving demands of a fast-paced industry.
As we celebrate this 6-year milestone, we are excited to see how SLC3 will continue to grow and thrive under Kelly’s leadership in the years ahead.
Congratulations on six transformative years!

LACLEDE’S LANDING SHIFTS FROM NIGHTLIFE TO NEIGHBORHOOD, NOT A PARTY ZONE ANYMORE
With the recent news published by Fox, we thought we would offer up some more information about an area we all “think” we know so well. If you are age 45+ chances are you think of the Landing as a row of night clubs you went to back when but haven’t been back for at least two decades. Or, perhaps you have and are disappointed at what once was at an earlier point in time. Perhaps that might be in my memory, but, today the landing is not what it was but in a revival. And you may not have any idea what someone visiting St. Louis might do there or even what a stay-cation might look like. Well, first of all, if you didn’t catch the article recently we are here to help you out.
https://fox2now.com/news/missouri/lacledes-landing-shifts-from-nightlife-to-neighborhood/
From this recent article: here are more work zones than party zones. Developers have pumped $70 million and counting into rebranding The Landing in recent months, according to Laclede’s Landing Main Street Neighborhood Association Executive Director Brandyn Jones.
“It’s a neighborhood. It was an entertainment district. There will be entertainment here, but really, now, it’s going to have the nature of a neighborhood: walkable, animal-friendly, services,” Jones said.
To recap the rest, the Landing has a grocery store mixed in with office and residential developments. New residents are comprised of pro athletes to retirees. Due to the unparalleled views of the Arch, Eads Bridge and Mississippi river the buildings sell themselves. Safety is the biggest concern but things are on an upswing per Alderwoman Cara Spencer. More than 800 people live and work in the neighborhood with expectations of three times as many.
What we want to share is a great resource when you are talking with non-residents about St. Louis, we suggest steering them to perhaps this page, Laclede’s Landing Riverfront District. May not be an earth shattering revelation, but if you are like me, you may not search much about your own hometown because you may say something like, “I have lived here all my life. I don’t think about it.” Well, I do think about development, but, I don’t stay up enough on what’s happening on the Riverfront. I loved to come to the Riverfront as a kid and go up in the arch and on the riverboats and eat at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Then I got of age and spent my share of time visiting hot spots at night and dining for lunch during the day as I worked downtown.
It is sad for those of us who saw a different City at one time, see things once so exciting go away. But we have seen some great new development too, which fortunately we have our industry to be thankful for making our environment one to enjoy. Check out that link as it has some updates you may not know and you may be inspired to have a little stay-cation soon and experience the Landing differently than you have before. I miss some of those great place we once had, but, we didn’t have some of the amazing places we have now. There is still something to enjoy and feel proud to share with outsiders!

5 Important 9/11 Facts You Don't Already Know
1. To this day, only 60% of the victims have been identified.
The attacks that took place on 9/11 add up to deadliest domestic terrorist attack that has ever taken place on modern American soil, with the total deaths reaching 2,977 (not including the 19 terrorists).
At the World Trade Center (WTC) in Lower Manhattan, 2,753 people died after American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the Twin Towers. According to CNN, only 1,644, or 60 percent, of those 2,753 victims have been identified as of July 2019. Not only does the death toll include innocent workers of the north and south towers, but it also includes NYC firefighters, police officers, and passersby.
2. The time between the first attack and the collapse of both World Trade Center towers is 102 minutes.
Though it seemed like a lifetime between the time of the first attack and the collapse of the Twin Towers, everything took place within two hours.

ArchKey Solutions, the Fenton-based electrical and technology contracting company, is being acquired by an investment firm launched by billionaire sports team owner Josh Harris.
New York-based private equity firm One Rock Capital Partners LLC, which invested in ArchKey alongside the company's management team in 2021, has agreed to sell the business to an affiliate of 26North Partners LP, officials said Wednesday.
The deal is the first transaction for New York-based 26North Partners' private equity platform, which launched last year and is led by 26North partner Mark Weinberg, according to a press release.

Contractors Shine a Light on Industry's Suicide Problem |
Source:
Construction Dive
With September being Suicide Prevention Month, and September 9-13 being Construction Suicide Prevention Week, now is the time to build or strengthen action plans to combat high rates of suicide within the construction industry. According to the CDC, male construction workers die by suicide at a rate 75% higher than men in the general population. With this grim and tragic data, industry stakeholders are being called to meet the moment.
The suicide death rate for construction workers was 2.4 times higher than all industries (46.1 vs. 19.5 per 100,000 full time employees) in 2022, and there were five times more suicides in construction than at-work fatalities that year, the most recently available set of data.
Dive Insight:
“The construction industry just comes with its own distinct risk factors that can contribute to suicide death,” said Jessica Bunting, research to practice director at CPWR, during the webinar, which also featured speakers from The Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Factors that contribute to suicide risk in construction, Bunting said, include extreme pressure to work quickly with a low margin for error, a male-dominated demographic that creates a “tough-guy” mentality, alcohol and drug use, poor access and utilization of healthcare, job instability or uncertainty and high injury rates that lead to chronic pain.
Those issues can often compound, too, she said. As workers feel like they need to keep working to support their families, they don’t prioritize their physical or mental health.
