THE CORNERSTONE
December 10, 2023
The Second Sunday of Advent
| |
During the season of Advent, a common complaint that we have concerns our attempts to deepen our spiritual lives through prayer. Either we aren't praying well or need more time to pray. Well, friends, "these are first-world problems." I say that because of the above photograph. It depicts three older Chinese women praying the rosary under cover of darkness for fear of persecution. In China, Christian prayer is illegal. Christians are persecuted daily in China. They fear for their lives. The Catholic Church in China is divided into a state-sanctioned "church" and one "underground." The latter one is thriving. But prayer is underground, and it comes with a risk. And this is not only in China but many other parts of the world.
So, next time we complain about not having time to pray or that our prayer is not what we would like it to be, don't stop by saying, "It's a first-world problem." But also offer a prayer for those who risk life and limb to pray somewhere in the world.

Public Input Phase Findings
The Seattle Archdiocese released a letter from Archbishop Etienne and a Parish Feedback Report, which synthesizes more than 3,000 pages of feedback from over 700 input session reports and 800 online forms during the Public Input Phase this fall.
The Presbyteral Council, Priest Personnel Board, Oversight Committee, Partners Core team, and Archbishop Etienne made a review of the feedback. As a result, proposed changes emerged for 25 parish families.
Our proposed Parish Family has changed. The Proposed Family 36 document details the proposed change and why it was made.
From now until December 15, a second round of consultation with staff and parishioners of the 25 proposed parish families will be held before a final recommendation is submitted to Archbishop Etienne at the end of the year. Final parish families will be announced in early 2024.
Second Round of Input Sessions
We invite you to join us for an input session to discern the latest changes to our proposed parish family and discuss and provide feedback.

Your monthly tax-deductible donation of $25, combined with 39 others from our parishes, will be matched by our giving partners to purchase an ultrasound machine for a pregnancy center.

Parishioner Assistance Still Needed — Pushpay Deadline Has Passed
Thank you for your consistent giving to our parish. We are grateful for your continued generosity and are excited to announce a new way to give. We value our parish community and want to ensure everyone knows about our new giving platform.
We are moving away from Our Sunday Visitor (OSV) Online Giving and EFT services. We have chosen to contract with Pushpay. We strive to be good stewards of your financial gifts and believe the significantly lower processing fees offered through Pushpay will allow your gift of treasure to support our parishes' mission further. As always, security is a top priority.
We aim to complete this transition process to Pushpay as soon as possible, so we need your help moving your current OSV Online Giving and EFT gifts.
Online Giving (credit cards or bank account)
If you currently donate online (via OSV), please follow the instructions below to set up your recurring gift through Pushpay and cancel your donation through OSV.
EFT (bank account only)
If you currently donate through EFT (donations processed via the Parish Office at Saint Patrick Parish), please follow the instructions below to set up your recurring gift through Pushpay. Then, email Michelle Carpenter to stop your EFT donations.
Envelopes
If you currently give using envelopes at Mass, please consider donating online and setting up an account in Pushpay by clicking the PUSHPAY button below.

Sharing the Light of Hope
The Catholic Community Services of Western Washington Appeal for the Poor Campaign kicked off last weekend.
Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services are our local Catholic Charities at work, serving tens of thousands of individuals and families in our neighborhood and across western Washington.
Every year, on average, CCS/CHS serves 100,000 poor and vulnerable people in Western WA through more than 170 programs. This collection is used to support programs and services in your local area, and 92 cents of every dollar goes directly to serving those in need.
We encourage you to review their 2023 highlights and consider how you will join the thousands of volunteers and staff to support our needy neighbors through prayer, advocacy, volunteerism, or a generous donation.
To make your gift go to CCS/CHS Appeal, please use a special collection envelope at mass, donate online, or use your parish Push Pay links in the article above this one.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)
CGS is an approach to faith formation where children 3-12 years old are formed in the Catholic faith in a sacred space called the atrium.
|
The Great Light
Advent is our time of waiting and preparing for the Feast of Christmas.
Cavalletti tells us that younger children easily focus on the joyful anticipation of the gift that is to come. "To enrich their knowledge of that gift and thus their joyful anticipation of its coming, we offer five messianic prophecies over two to three years in the level I atrium."
In the atrium, we ponder with the children the words of the prophet Isaiah, found in the first verse of Chapter Nine:
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
