This past Friday, STEMworksā„¢ Live featured two industry presenters who showed us snapshots of our STEM future! Josh Davies from the Center for Work Ethic Development and Todd Johnson from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics highlighted the demand for STEM careers and provided tools to get you there.

What does work ethic mean to you? Josh Davies, CEO from the Center for Work Ethic Development, shared 7 workplace skills that will help you get and keep employment!

Josh's Work Ethic 101 presentation was high energy and jam-packed with work-force facts and simple exercises you can do to demonstrate your employability. He wants everyone to know that having a strong work ethic helps you in school, work, and life!

Josh also highlighted the importance of having interpersonal skills in the workplace. He notes that "technical skills will get you through the door, but soft skills will keep you there for years." Companies will help you thrive in their workplace if you are able to have a positive attitude and show a willingness to learn. Josh himself looks for ambitious people with positive attitudes who can take ownership of successes and failures. His goal is to prepare the workforce of the future with these 7 workplace skills!

  • Staying positive in every situation. Take control of the way your react.
  • Attendance
  • Showing you're reliable in every phase of life. Be on time, every time.
  • Appearance
  • Being professional both in the way you look, and the way you act. Choose to be a pro.

  • Having respect and following direction. Be coachable and play by the rules.

  • Demonstrating your gratitude towards others. Provide selfless service.

  • Living honestly and having integrity with every decision you make. Refuse to rationalize bad decisions.

Where can you go with your dream job? Todd Johnson from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed us data on jobs in the U.S. and projections for STEM industry careers!

The numbers show that 6.2% of those employed in the U.S. have STEM jobs! What does that mean for Hawaii students? STEM is Hawaii's future! From mathematical scientists to chemical engineers, and architects to anesthesiologists, there is always a need for STEM leaders in both Hawaii and the U.S.

Todd's presentation also featured the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook. It is a comprehensive guide to career outlooks and demographics in the U.S. See where you can go with the paths you want to take!
