ASTEC'S NEWEST COMPETITIVE SPORT
ASTEC is excited to welcome eSports to the middle and high school this year! eSports is a sanctioned sport by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA). Students in eSports will be competing virtually against other teams across Oklahoma and beyond throughout the school year.

ASTEC scholars will benefit from having a community of like-minded peers to compete with and learn from. There are many college scholarships available to students in eSports and the popularity of the sport continues to grow.

ASTEC’s eSports coach is Jose Alvarado. Mr. Alvarado graduated from Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) with a Bachelor of Science degree in music. He was heavily involved in marching band, choir, and eSports events and in the development of eSports in his area while attending ENMU.

During college, Mr. Alvarado was the team captain for his eSports club and ENMU chapter leader for the Texas eSports Association (TESPA). He also served as eSports club officer where he managed club streams, on- and off-campus events, and was accepted for a SteelSeries Student Ambassadorship.

In his last year as an undergraduate at ENMU, Mr. Alvarado became the eSports club president. He was involved in club and team recruitment and management, event organization, and the professional development of the club.

Under Mr. Alvarado’s direction, the club attended invitational tournaments at other institutions. He organized charity eSports events to raise money for the Miracle Children’s Hospital Network. Mr. Alvarado’s club development and student interest was enough for ENMU to fund an official university eSports team, granting scholarship opportunities for future students of the university.

When asked about his new role as ASTEC’s first eSports coach Mr. Alvarado said, "eSports is an exciting worldwide phenomena with limitless potential for academic furtherance. Giving ASTEC students the opportunity to grow alongside it, market themselves as professional players, and look into career opportunities within the industry demonstrates ASTEC's mission to provide a variety of opportunities using innovative means and tools. Although the program is still in its infancy, ASTEC's mission is something I am passionate about developing as the new eSports coach.”
FABLAB MAKER SPACE
ASTEC’s new FabLab, digital fabrication laboratory, maker space is ready for middle and high school scholars! Here is a look at ASTEC’s MakerBot Sketch 3D printers at work!

Fab labs allow students to turn their ideas into new products and prototypes by giving them access to a range of advanced digital manufacturing technology.

The idea was conceived by renowned inventor and scientist Professor Neil Gershenfeld at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His idea was a simple one: to provide the environment, skills, advanced materials and technology to make things cheaply and quickly anywhere in the world.

Parents may bring in the $25 STAPLES gift card and gift card receipt to your school site office before school begins or may bring it on the first day. Please print your child’s name on the card and receipt in permanent marker.

Mr. Porter attended sessions designed to help new and veteran teachers improve their classroom teaching. When asked about the conference, Mr. Porter said, "Being around hundreds of educators who are all working to move education forward is an inspiring event. I'm excited to work with our teachers this year to provide the best education possible for our scholars."
FABLAB TULSA
ASTEC STEM teachers participated in a series of instructional training sessions in July. They were conducted by a new ASTEC community partner, FabLab Tulsa. Trainers of the FabLab Tulsa team provided fabrication tools and guidance to ASTEC teachers who created unique and authentic items during the workshop.

FabLab Tulsa’s mission is to empower the community by providing education, community, workforce and business programming that teaches innovation, design-thinking, problem-solving and change-making, together with open and equitable access to 21st Century digital fabrication tools, equipment and technology.

FabLab Tulsa helped to design and integrate a number of fabrication machines into the new ASTEC STEM Engineering lab.
