100th DAY OF SCHOOL

We celebrate the 100th day of school because it is a big deal! It’s a day to reflect on accomplishments made during this school year. The students and teachers discuss how the 1st day of school compares to the 100th day.

This is the perfect number for the youngest students to count to 100 by 1s and 10s. Older students practice counting to 100 by 2s and 5s and the oldest elementary students add and subtract 3-digit numbers and begin multiplication. The number 100 helps students learn patterns, sorting, and measuring.

Elementary children may dress up as their favorite 100-year-old person to celebrate this big day and have some fun. We encourage them to get creative with glasses, hair, makeup, and outfits. We will also be doing some fun activities throughout the day related to the number 100.

*Please note: Due to inclement weather we will celebrate the 100th Day of School on Wednesday, February 1. Please do not send any mobility aids such as canes, walkers, or wheelchairs as part of their costume.

_________

DECEMBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

TARDIES & ABSENCES

Tardies

Students are tardy if they are not in the classroom by 8:00 a.m. We still have too many students who are just coming in the door at 8:00 a.m. If they come in the door right at 8:00 a.m., they are tardy to school because they are not seated in their classroom BEFORE 8:00 a.m.

Three tardies equal one absence.

Excessive tardies will result in the scholar being placed on probation to continue to be allowed to attend ASTEC Elementary School. If there are too many tardies, it may be in the best interest of the scholar to return to a neighborhood school to allow them to arrive at school on time and not lose any instruction due to repeated tardiness.

Parents of students with excessive tardies will be required to meet with the Elementary Headmaster, Ms. O’Connor, to see if any solutions can be found.

Absences

State law requires students to be in attendance 90% of the school year. Therefore, students may not miss more than 10% of the school year. Students who fail to meet this requirement are at risk of being retained and not promoted to the next grade level.

Parents of students with excessive absences will be required to meet with the Elementary Headmaster, Ms. O’Connor, to seek solutions for the excessive absences. If a solution is not found, it may be deemed in the best interest of the students to be referred back to their neighborhood school.

LEER EN ESPAÑOL

SPELLING MICHELANGELO-STYLE

ASTEC 5th-grade students in Ms. Krista Salesberry’s class practiced writing spelling patterns  Michelangelo-style, on their backs and overhead. Other options were writing with the opposite hand or creating rainbow words or ghost words. Ms. Salesberry knows that student choice increases engagement!

ASTEC TEACHER WEBSITES

In an effort to make it easier for parents and students to access teachers, grades, and other links from one location, each ASTEC Teacher has created a website where this and other information regarding their classes can be found.

On the sites, you will find links to information about the teacher and useful links that students and parents need. Each site has a contact form and teacher contact information for easy communication with that teacher.

To access the sites go to the ASTEC website, click on the "Faculty & Staff" link in the main navigation bar, and select “All Faculty” link and scroll down to find the teacher you are looking for. Beside each picture is a “website” link that will take you directly to that teacher’s website.

REMINDER ABOUT COATS

Cold weather is here! Please remember that students will need to wear a heavier coat into the building during the colder months. Once in their classrooms, students need to put their heavier coats in their cubbies.

Also please put your child’s name on the tag inside their black lightweight jacket or on blue tape inside the coat. The lightweight jackets look exactly alike. We would love to return them but can only do so when there is a name on the jacket.

___________
