A Monastic Cell
Dear Friends in Christ,
As we move toward the solemn celebrations of Holy Week and Easter, the cross will begin to have a more dominant presence in our Lenten Season. However, in reality, it should always have a place in our daily life. In fact, Jesus’ cross must become our own cross as well. Jesus says, “If anyone wants to come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24). In the Letter to the Galatians, Saint Paul says that we too must follow Jesus to our own cross: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20).
From the beginning, Christians have responded to the invitation to carry the crosses of life and to be crucified with Jesus in the burdens and challenges of life. We see this most notably in those who live the monastic life. For example, Carmelite sisters and brothers generally have a plain cross, not a crucifix, above their beds in their monastic cells. It hangs as a reminder that they are to place themselves on the cross each day as they go about their life of prayer and sacrifice. It becomes a visual reminder to be united to Christ in this crucial way: a way of surrender and sacrifice. To take up the cross and freely place ourselves on it can become a beautiful way to conform our lives to the Lord Jesus. As Lent moves on, the cross begins to loom large!
May God bless you all in the week ahead!

Holy Week at Saint Patrick and Holy Cross Churches
As we come together more as a parish family, our Holy Week will begin to follow more closely what is called for in the Roman Missal. As you know, for the past six years, we have had one Easter Vigil celebration, with sacraments of initiation, at Saint Patrick. That’s because our two churches combined our Christian Initiation programs in 2018. This beautiful solemn Mass begins the Easter Season as we welcome new Catholics into the Church. This year, we have 31 people being baptized at the Easter Vigil! This is one of our largest groups ever. And this is a trend across the Archdiocese, as well. The Holy Spirit is at work calling people to God.
According to the Roman Missal and liturgical policy, the Sacred Triduum [literally the three holy days] of the Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper, the Good Friday Service, and the Great Easter Vigil with Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist for new Catholics, is actually meant to be one single liturgy, preferably at a single church. It is not meant to be duplicated for the sake of convenience. This is especially true where two communities are served by one pastor that are close by, and where ministries are shared, as they are by Holy Cross and Saint Patrick.
For the past six years, we haven't followed this norm in all respects, as we have had two Holy Thursday Masses, two Good Friday Services, and one Easter Vigil at Saint Patrick. But as we are working toward bringing our churches closer together now and in the future along with Saint John Vianney, it's best to follow the practice of the Roman Missal and our local liturgical policy by moving toward one, single Sacred Triduum between Holy Cross and Saint Patrick, with one minor exception: we will still use both churches.
So, there will be one Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper celebrated by me at Saint Patrick at 7:00 pm, with Fr. Ron concelebrating the Mass as well. Deacon Steve and Deacon Bill will both serve at this Mass, along with a combined choir from both churches. Both of us priests will also wash the feet of 12 parishioners from both churches, a beautiful part of this celebration.
Then, there will be one Good Friday Service of the Veneration of the Cross with Holy Communion at Holy Cross at 6:00 pm. Both Deacon Steve and Deacon Bill will serve. In addition, there will be Stations of the Cross at both churches that day.
I would encourage you to come to celebrate this important liturgical celebration of the Sacred Triduum that re-presents the saving action of the Lord Jesus FOR US! Further, when we gather together as a united community of faith, it prepares us for the one liturgy that we will, in fact, all celebrate at one time in eternity: the Heavenly Liturgy in communion with the Blessed Trinity. So let’s prepare now!

Vespers
Step away from the busyness of life and enter into the peace of Lenten prayer.
As we journey to the cross, take time to pause, reflect, and pray at Lenten Vespers—an evening of Scripture, psalms, and quiet contemplation in the presence of God.
This ancient tradition of the Church invites us to deepen our relationship with Christ and prepare our hearts for His Passion and Resurrection.

Whether you're new to Vespers or have prayed with us before, this evening is a perfect way to journey through Lent and heed Saint Paul's call to "pray constantly" for the world and the Church!

Walk to Calvary with Jesus
The Health Ministry's annual Meatless Fridays in Lent campaign starts on the first Friday of Lent and ends on Good Friday.
It's a beautiful way to improve not only your spiritual well-being but also your health. The Health Ministry invites you to try a new, tasty meatless recipe each week and recommends that you take a healthful walk of at least 1/3 of a mile each Sunday to commemorate the distance Jesus walked on his journey to Calvary and reflect on the Prayer for Sundays during Lent during your walk.
A Chance to Win
Everyone who goes meatless on all Fridays in Lent is eligible for a chance to win a $100 Metropolitan Market gift card courtesy of the Health Ministry.
Meatless Recipes
We'll share meatless recipes from the Metropolitan Market selected by the Health Ministry each week. Check out the recipe and shop for ingredients this weekend so you're ready.

Fasting & Abstinence
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.
Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter.
Code of Canon Law, 1249-1252
Fasting is to be observed by all eighteen and older who have not yet celebrated their sixtieth birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together, they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juice, are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all fourteen years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

Tenebræ
Wednesday's Tenebræ Service gets us started for the central days of Holy Week. Tenebræ is a "service of shadows."

The Church has celebrated chanted Tenebræ since medieval times. It is a prolonged meditation on Christ's suffering, and the haunting power of the chant in the darkness suggests the drama of this momentous moment.
As scriptures and psalms are proclaimed and sung relating to the prophetic suffering of the Messiah, candles on a triangular candelabra are extinguished until we are in darkness. A loud sound marks the Lord's death, and then the return of a single candle represents the Lord's presence amid the darkness of the fallen world, which Easter's resurrection will soon renew. It is a beautiful way to begin Holy Week. It sets the mood of one's heart to prepare to enter the mystery of the Paschal Mystery of Jesus' suffering, death, and resurrection.
We remember the cataclysmic nature of His sacrifice as we hear the overwhelming thunder of the strepitus—the closing of the tomb. And by returning the small but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the service, we anticipate the joy of ultimate victory.

Triduum
The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum, which lasts from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day, unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery.

Flowers for the Altar
We invite you to donate to the Altar Flower Fund at Saint Patrick Church, which provides the arrangements that adorn the altar throughout the liturgical year. Your generosity ensures the worship space remains beautiful and reverent during the various liturgical seasons.
Flowers have long held a special place in the Catholic Mass, symbolizing the beauty of God’s creation and the joy of our worship. Altar flowers enhance the sacred space, drawing our hearts and minds to the glory of God and helping to create a prayerful atmosphere for the celebration of the Eucharist.
Supporting the Altar Flower Fund is a meaningful way to contribute to liturgical life; one-time and recurring donations are appreciated in preparation for Easter.

Our OCIA group was a witness to Christ’s journey to Calvary, leading Stations of the Cross last Friday.
Among those who carried the cross and torches were Jason Norris (left) and Gabe Court (right), both preparing for baptism at this year’s Easter Vigil. In the center, Dayton Ericson is a sponsor for Connor Davidson, who will also receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Vigil.
A special thank you to Kevin Crisalli and Jim Price for proclaiming the readings and Mark Miller for leading us in song.
As we continue through Lent, join us for Stations and keep the catechumens in your prayers, walking with them toward the joy of the Resurrection!

Last Supper Celebrations
Thank you to Joseph C. from Level I atrium and his family for baking one of the beautiful loaves of bread for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd agape meal!
Not only did it look amazing, but it was delicious, and everyone loved it. You can bake it, too, following the same special recipe passed down to families over the years.
Fun fact: Joseph’s Godfather is none other than Fr. David! Thanks to that special connection, Joseph found his way to the atrium—and we’re so glad he did. He’s sweet, full of energy, and loves the Mass. His favorite work? The Model Altar.
♱
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based faith formation approach for children ages 3-12. Children and adults listen to God together in a retreat-like setting called the atrium.

Stations of the Cross by Saint Alphonsus Liguori |
The Augustine Institute presents a beautiful meditation on the Stations of the Cross by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, narrated by Dr. Christopher Blum. This prayerful reflection is accompanied by the Schola Cantorum of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Littleton, CO, chanting the traditional Catholic hymn Stabat Mater, in Latin, which depicts the loving presence of Our Sorrowful Mother, sharing in the suffering of Christ at the foot of the cross.
Take advantage of this audio on your commute, at home, or anywhere you find the time to enrich your prayer during Lent or throughout the year and better unite yourself to the Passion of Christ.
