Bipartisan Bill Seeks to Allow Direct Prescribing of Methadone for Opioid Addiction


A bipartisan Senate bill would allow board-certified addiction physicians to prescribe methadone for opioid use disorder, with patients able to pick up the medication at pharmacies instead of relying only on specialty clinics. Supporters say the change could reduce barriers to treatment, while the proposal is likely to face continued resistance from parts of the opioid treatment clinic industry. (Source: STAT)

By the Numbers: There Are Now More Daily Marijuana Users in the US Than Daily Alcohol Users


New research based on National Survey on Drug Use and Health data found that an estimated 17.7 million people reported daily or near-daily marijuana use in 2022, compared with 14.7 million who reported daily or near-daily alcohol use. The findings point to a major shift in substance use patterns, with 42% of past-month marijuana users reporting daily or near-daily use compared with 11% of alcohol users. (Source: AP News)

Philadelphia Providers Share Policy Barriers to Opioid Use Disorder Treatment


A University of Pennsylvania study found that Philadelphia opioid treatment providers see insurance coverage gaps, low reimbursement rates, payor rules, and licensing requirements as major obstacles to low-barrier care. The findings suggest that policy reforms could help providers deliver more flexible, evidence-based treatment for people with opioid use disorder. (Source: Penn LDI)

Woodland Park Considers Bans on Cannabis Use in Parks, Municipal Spaces


Woodland Park officials introduced two ordinances that would prohibit cannabis consumption on borough property, including parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, recreation centers, municipal buildings, parking lots, trails and borough-sponsored events. The proposal would also create a 250-foot Youth Recreation Protection Zone around youth activities while they are taking place, with fines ranging from up to $250 for a first offense to up to $1,000 for repeat violations.
