PASTOR'S LETTER

Dear Friends in Christ,

Bishop Robert Barron's Word on Fire Institute often sends me information, including articles written by various people from the Institute. I want to share with you a few words written by Bishop Barron himself on a good perspective we should have in the season of Lent. I hope you enjoy them and take them to heart:

"I chanced upon an advertisement by a Catholic Church for Ash Wednesday. Next to a symbol representing ashes in the sign of the cross, it said, "Ashes say you belong." Now, don't get me wrong. I'm sure those who put up that ad had nothing but good intentions, and there is certainly nothing in the world wrong with making people feel welcome. But once again, for Pete's sake, when the priest or minister applies ashes to someone's forehead, he says either "Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return" or "Repent and believe the Gospel." In other words, the ashes are not meant as a sign of welcome. They are meant to be the starkest possible reminder that we will die and that our bodies, even if they are young and beautiful, will inevitably return to the dirt of the earth and that we are sinners who have rebelled against God and who need to radically turn our lives around. In a word, the ashes are dark, alarming, somber— and meant to be so.

The Church in which I came of age— which is to say, the Church immediately after Vatican II, was, if I can put it this way, relentlessly positive. Joy, peace, God's love and forgiveness, the goodness of all things, eternal life— these were what we exclusively talked about, sang about, insisted upon. And all of those are indeed central to the Bible and the great spiritual tradition. But so are suffering, loss, God's judgment and demand, the fallenness of the world, deep and painful resistance to God, etc. I would challenge you to read any two pages of the Bible, Old Testament or New, and not encounter this darker side of our religion. Lent is a privileged time during the liturgical year when we are encouraged to come to grips with our sin, our mortality, our moral frailty, and our need for forgiveness. I guess I found the advertisement so off-putting because it obfuscated the message of Lent and interfered with the proper spiritual dynamic of the season. Not everything has to be chirpy and upbeat in the religious order. In point of fact, I believe that one reason so many have opted out of the Church is that our presentation of the faith has become superficial, unreal, nicey-nicey. So, as we enter into these forty days, I say, Let Lent be Lent!"

Blessings to you all in the week ahead!

Fasting & Abstinence from the Archdiocese of Seattle

For this penitential season, the Church draws on the wisdom of the Scriptures and tradition in suggesting a time of intense prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

Catholics in the United States are obliged to abstain on all Fridays during the season of Lent. Catholics are also obliged to fast on Good Friday, March 29.

Fasting

On a day of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but they should not equal the other full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are permitted. The obligation of fasting binds Catholics who are 18-59 years old.

Abstinence

On days of abstinence, eating meat is not allowed. The obligation of abstinence applies to those 14 years and older. The law does not oblige when health or ability to work would be seriously affected.

Lenten Devotional

Saint Patrick Catholic School created a special Lenten Devotional to share with your family. Inside is a collection of reflections— one for each day of Lent from the Saint Patrick Catholic School community members.

Bookmark it and incorporate the devotional into your nightly meal time with the family during Lent.

Walk to Calvary with Jesus

The Health Ministry's annual Meatless Fridays in Lent campaign starts on the first Friday of Lent and ends on Good Friday.

It's a beautiful way to improve not only your spiritual well-being but also your health. The Health Ministry invites you to try a new, tasty meatless recipe each week and recommends that you take a healthful walk of at least 1/3 of a mile each Sunday to commemorate the distance Jesus walked on his journey to Calvary and reflect on the Prayer for Sundays during Lent during your walk.

A Chance to Win

Everyone who goes meatless on all Fridays in Lent is eligible for a chance to win a $100 Metropolitan Market gift card courtesy of the Health Ministry.

Catholic Home Missions

Over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they cannot fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities.

These dioceses face challenges due to priest shortages, lack of funds, remote

geography, or impoverished parishes. Through annual grants, the Catholic Home Mission Collection funds catechesis, seminarian education, lay ministry training, Hispanic ministry, and other pastoral programs. As a result of parishioners' generosity, Catholic Home Missions impact the lives of nearly nine million Catholics in the United States.

Please be generous during the special collection, which takes place from February 24 to 25. Donations can be dropped in the offertory basket at Mass using the special collection envelope or online using your parish giving link.

She believes a faith-based approach provides the best support for people on their grief journey. After retirement, she coordinated the Grief Ministry at St. Rose Parish for two years. Kris and her husband, Mario Forte, moved to Tacoma to be closer to their children and grandchildren and joined Saint Patrick Parish.

FAITH FORMATION

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)

In the atrium during Lent, the children learn about the Good Shepherd, who knows each sheep, even if there are many sheep. He calls his sheep, and gradually, they become accustomed to His voice; they listen to Him and follow Him. In this way a precious relationship is established; a thread of love binds the sheep always more closely to their Shepherd. In the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atrium, the children come to know that the Shepherd's voice is powerful and supremely patient; it never tires of calling and reaches out even to those sheep who are far away, beyond the sheepfold. Slowly, they, too, turn to hear His voice, and they gather together into one great flock.

CGS is an approach to faith formation where children 3-12 years old are formed in the Catholic faith in a sacred space called the atrium.

To learn more about CGS at Saint Patrick Church, visit the atrium, serve or train as a catechist, email Kim Ward, CGS Coordinator, or call 253-274-4108.

PHOTO HIGHLIGHT

Vespers is the Evening Prayer of the Church, known as the Liturgy of the Hours, prayed daily by priests, religious, and lay people throughout the world, using the Psalms and other scriptures.

By gathering in the Liturgy to pray this evening prayer of the Church, we heed Saint Paul's call to "pray constantly" for the world and the Church!

Erica Minneman, Music Director at Holy Cross Church, served as the lead cantor for Vespers, organized by Thom Ryng.

Let's pray at 6:00 pm on Sundays in Lent and Palm Sunday at Saint Patrick Church, followed by Mass at 7:00 pm.
