Health Literacy is defined by the World Health Organization as ‘cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health. By improving people’s access to health information and their capacity to use it effectively, health literacy is critical to empowerment.’”

In this context, I love studying landmark literature such as: The impact of health literacy on patient understanding of counseling and education materials, authored by Erika L. Nair and Kathleen M. Cienkowski, then published in the International Journal of Audiology (2010).


A Summary Statement of their thought-provoking and inspiring missive is worthy of reflection:


“Clear communication via functioning amplification and utilization of good listening strategies can provide better access to information from all healthcare professionals. Without clear communication, it is likely that hearing-impaired patients will not become successful users of the healthcare system. 


“It is eminent that audiologists effectively communicate with their patients about their hearing healthcare because not only does it increase the likelihood that they will be both more satisfied with their hearing health care and more satisfied with their overall healthcare. In this regard, audiologists are a critical link to world healthcare organizations’ goals of improving health literacy for patients.”


As alluded to, Hearing Care Experts are often Unsung Heroes, uniquely qualified to Amplify Impact with “all healthcare professionals” involved in Whole Person Care paradigms. Evidently, this is a primary reason why virtually every practice I speak with is motivated to expand their physician referral network. Realizing multidisciplinary alignment is essential, more patients and allied medical specialists should be In the Know.

In conversations with progressive practices nationwide, I consistently hear serious concerns about mega healthcare systems which dominate their local markets.1

For a bit of macro perspective, the American Medical Association (AMA) reports that between 2012 and 2022, the share of physicians working in:

  • private practices dropped by 13 percentage points from 60.1% to 46.7%. 
  • practices with 10 or fewer physicians fell from 61.4% in 2012 to 51.8%. 
  • practices with 50 or more physicians grew from 12.2% to 18.3%. 
  • single-specialty practices were 42% and a 4% increase to 26.7% in multi-specialty practices.
