WHAT
ANNE IS READING

Who is author Tori Bailey?
Tori's characters may speak with a southern drawl, but their stories are universal. She is the author of the Coming Home series: A Second Chance at Goodbye, Ethel's Song, and Love-Made from Scratch. Her books bring a mixture of romance with a tinge of suspense. Her characters could easily be your next door neighbor. The one you enjoy sitting on the front porch, sipping something stronger than sweet tea, and "discussing" everyone's lives but your own.
A native of Georgia, Tori lives in the Athens area and swears she bleeds red and black. Her five children speak the language of "mew" with an occasional disgruntle "meh." Somewhere under all the cat hair is her husband of twenty plus years. When not cleaning cat up-chuck, litter boxes, or refereeing the latest test of wills, Tori enjoys scrounging through thrift stores, antique auctions, and finding the next "honey-do" project for her husband.

A SECOND CHANCE AT GOODBYE is Tori's five-star read available from THE SOUTHERN PEN BOOK STORE or from AMAZON . It's a "second-chance story" set in the place I went to college: Athens, Georgia. What's not for me to love? You will too!

Anne Harris could not find any tears to shed as they laid her father, Mac, to rest. The only emotion she felt was resentment toward him and his business- Mac's Flying Service. Soon it would be hers to sell and there was a buyer eager to purchase it.
Maggie Cosby yearned for the carefree days of flight instructing and being with Mac. News of his death will beckon her to return to the place that is home for her - a World War II hangar and Athens, Georgia.
Together, Anne and Maggie, will realize how little they knew about Mac. Anne will discover the father she refused to know. Maggie will have to decide to live in the past or accept the love of the present. Each will wish for a second chance to say goodbye to the man that sacrificed his life for them.
by Angela Jackson-Brown

I am proud to say I am a Spalding MFA alum of Angela Jackson-Brown. This novel of hers is heart-wrenching and insightful, especially in light of the continued fight for racial justice and equality. Available paperback and Kindle on Amazon.

Who is Angela Jackson-Brown?
Angela Jackson-Brown is an award winning writer, poet and playwright who teaches Creative Writing and English at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. She is a graduate of the Spalding low-residency MFA program in Creative Writing. She is the author of the novel Drinking From A Bitter Cup and has published in numerous literary journals. Angela’s play, Anna’s Wings, was selected in 2016 to be a part of the IndyFringe DivaFest and her play, Flossie Bailey Takes a Stand, was part of the Indiana Bicentennial Celebration at the Indiana Repertory Theatre. She also wrote and produced the play It Is Well and she was the co-playwright with Ashya Thomas on a play called Black Lives Matter (Too). In the spring of 2018, Angela co-wrote a musical with her colleague, Peter Davis, called Dear Bobby: The Musical, that was part of the 2018 OnyxFest in Indianapolis, IN. Her book of poetry called House Repairs was published by Negative Capability Press in the fall of 2018, and in the fall of 2019, she directed and produced a play she wrote called Still Singing Those Weary Blues .

1978. The year I turned ten and the year my mama killed herself. She was thirty-five, and dying is the last thing that should have been on her mind.
After the death of her mother, Sylvia Butler's father, a man she knows only from an old photo, takes her from Louisville, Kentucky to Ozark, Alabama to live with his family. But his wife resents everything about this intruder, from her out-of-wedlock conception to her dark skin and nappy hair. When the wife's younger brother Charles returns from Vietnam, Sylvia thinks she has found a friend and confidante, only to be hurt again, but this time, in a manner she never could have imagined.
Set under the backdrop of the Deep South in the 70s and 80s, this coming of age story of redemption and grace follows Sylvia in her journey from awkward girl to confident young woman, at last standing on her own.

An inspirational message about
OPTIMISM, PERSISTENCE, AND DETERMINATION!

Over ten years ago when Jan and I first met and began collaborating on WITH KISSES FROM CÉCILE , a friend of Jan's, photographer Cheryl M. Stewart , snapped this picture of a rooster that reminded her of Herkimer. At that time, Jan sent me this copy of the picture as a sweet birthday card.
After a lightning strike burned down my house the summer of 2017, I thought this card to be lost along with almost everything else - but, to my delight, I found it in a box of papers that the restoration company finally returned last month!
The fire, smoke, and water damage had seared the envelope to it, which I carefully managed to steam apart.

I consider this surviving card an inspiring prized possession. for it symbolizes the traits of optimism, persistence and determination we all need in order to persevere during this crazy time of COVID-19 and the fight for racial equality -- not to mention other personal difficulties that are not front page news but we each face in our lives.

These traits are especially important for a writer's psyche. An author can toil for years without any story ever being published. Regardless, the writer continues to write for the stories in her heart must be written.

Even though Jan's prediction in her birthday note to me did not come true that year, we never lost faith. Over a decade later our dream came true when we published WITH KISSES FROM CÉCILE .

For those who've read the book -- Is this how you pictured Herkimer?
