Pastor Ken Lewis, a former Clemson football player from three decades ago, would spend time with our staff counseling and encouraging us on many occasions. He made a statement to us one day referencing the Bible that changed my life. He said that everyone needs a ‘Paul’ (Mentor) and a ‘Timothy’ (Mentee) in their life. What Pastor Lewis was saying is that everyone needs someone to pour into and someone to pour into them. Think of a river and a lake water system. The river always has fresh water coming down feeding another bigger body of water. The river is fed by small streams, creeks and springs. It then regenerates over and over. You get the picture!
We have no secrets in this coaching business. Everyone has taken and learned from someone else. When I was a young coach, I read every book I could find to gain knowledge, got a master’s degree in exercise science and spent years under the bar. I felt confident about myself as a coach. What I didn’t realize, is that my mentor coaches had already answered questions to problems that I had not even had to question yet. What I am saying is that they had the answers before I even had the questions. This is where wisdom is built.
