Description:
This hands-on art-based play therapy session will consist of a specific application of art-based therapeutic activities to help children ignite their passion, recommit to the therapeutic process and engage more than ever. A list of required materials for creating and experiencing the end products will be provided. Each activity will be processed .Participants are invited to share one art activity with the group.
Although Ms. Hinds is not an art therapist, what is being presented are art-based therapeutic activities in play therapy that have been successful.
Objectives:
- State the benefits of using art in play therapy with children and adults
- Demonstrate art activities for self-regulation, hope, inspiration, and healing, in addition to games and activities
- Identify and share with the group one favorite play therapy strategy to include rationale
- Demonstrate the use of at least 3 games that may be used as a therapeutic tool in play therapy
- Demonstrate use of a specific play therapy activity to create treatment goals
- Demonstrate the use of storytelling in play therapy followed by tape art activity

Sonia Hinds, APRN, CNS, RPT-S™ is the Founder and CEO of Chesapeake Beach Professional Seminars. Founder and Executive Director of Barstow Acres Children’s Center, a non-profit practice providing children's mental health services. Ms. Hinds is trained in Child-Centered and Gestalt play therapy with Violet Oaklander (retired). Authored chapter, Play Therapy with African-American Village in text, Cultural Issues in Play Therapy, edited by Eliana Gil, PhD, RPT-S and Athena Drewes, PsyD, RPT-S. Ms. Hinds received the MD/DC APT 2019 Outstanding Service Award.
