We hope you are staying healthy!
This month's newsletter is about the power and promise of our youth. Margaret Mead said, "The young, free to act on their initiative, can lead their elders in the direction of the unknown… The children, the young, must ask the questions that we would never think to ask.."
At the Monta Vista HS Bike for Boba Day, we saw kids encourage other kids to bike to school and reduce their carbon footprint. Our very own Walk-Bike Cupertino Board member Kelly Tung - a Junior at Monta Vista - was awarded the city's 2021 Crest Award for her amazing work in the community. Read her story, you'll be impressed. She makes us hopeful that the planet is in good hands with the next generation.
The Regnart Creek Trail continues to progress towards its August 2022 opening date. Check out the video of the bridge being installed which will connect the trail to Wilson Park. Enjoy Rick Kitson's hilarious story of his epic bike ride from Norway to Turkey and back again as a youth. He jumped headlong into an adventure that most adults would never dream to do and came out with life lessons for all of us.
We also offer tips on how to choose the best route for biking to your destination and recap the (growing larger every year!) Cupertino Fall Bike Fest. As the stories in this newsletter highlight, challenging our assumptions makes the world a better place.

Bike for Boba a Big Hit
by Larry Dean
Nearly 200 Monta Vista High School (MVHS) cyclists rode their bikes and scooters to classes on Friday, Sept 24th, on its first Bike for Boba (B4B) Day. Reducing the school’s carbon footprint and traffic congestion around the school campus, the ridership was an increase of 16% over the 165 average daily riders this year.
The B4B Day for the Environment is a joint venture organized by Walk-Bike Cupertino and led by MVHS’ student leadership council and the Rotary Interact club. Mr. Tea Boba Shop generously subsidized the gifting of free Boba coupons for the student participants. Cupertino’s Safe Routes to School program also provided free bike safety items for all riders. The next B4B Day is scheduled for October 22nd. Read more...

Back in…let’s call them the before times, my bike was my trusty steed on which I rode to many adventures. Little did I imagine 50 years later, that would still be true. The bicycle continues to be a thread that runs throughout my life, connecting me both to people and the world.
These days, I’m older (definitely) and wiser (hopefully). I visit with my Norwegian family whenever I can, repair bikes for free whenever I can both at home and with Silicon Valley Bike Exchange, and look for opportunities to get on two wheels whenever possible. Now, when I want to be with friends, make new ones, or be alone, I ride my bike. And I am once again better for it. Read more...

Fun Times at The 2021 Cupertino Bike Fest
Fall Bike Fest in Cupertino was again a well-attended event and fun time for all! After its cancellation last year due to the pandemic, it was great to get together again, enjoy a great family bike ride and games, ride the blender bike to make smoothies, get great freebies, and learn about new equipment.
This year Walk-Bike Cupertino provided free helmet fittings and installed free bike safety wings, to give bikes some added visibility and encourage cars to keep their distance. Read more...

Safety Tip: Choosing a Bike Route
by Matt Widmann
This is a new series for our WBC newsletter, highlighting a great safety tip each month!
Bicycle safety is the most important aspect of biking – before fitness or fun, you have to know how to avoid collisions with other road users. This advice comes from years of biking through suburban neighborhoods in the United States and I probably have blindspots when it comes to built-up cities and rural areas. There are three key areas of safe biking: routing, behavior, and equipment. As the first safety tip, we will focus on routing. Read more...
