Almost 100 Attend Spring Fling
MAFP's Spring Fling had almost 100 resident and student registrants, making it the largest Spring Fling ever. A crawfish boil kicked things off on Friday night. Saturday, residents attended sessions on contract negotiation, risk management and debt reduction. Many residents also presented Quality Improvement posters. Students saw speakers on technology, how to be a 'rock-star' doctor, and attended procedural workshops on casting/splinting, defibrillator training, tourniquets and sports injuries.
MATCH Day Results: What's the Scoop on the New Interns?
On Match Day 2019, Mississippi had 43 medical school graduates accepted into Family Medicine residency programs across the country. Of that number, 24 were graduates of WCUCOM and 19 were graduates of UMMC. Fifteen of the 43 will stay in Mississippi for residency and we hope the rest will return to Mississippi after their training. The American Academy of Family Physicians reported a total of 3,848 people matched into Family Medicine (313 more than last year), and there was an increase of 474 FM residency positions offered over last year.

Here are the MATCH lists provided by the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and William Carey University COM.

A Scholarship to Attend a National Family Medicine Conference?
Yes! But You Must Apply

Apply now to attend the AAFP National Conference for Residents and Students, July 25-27 in Kansas City, MO. MAFP Foundation awards scholarships each year of up to $1,000 for residents and students to attend this event. The application deadline is June 13.

"The serious, purposeful atmosphere of the conference made me proud to be a future family doc," said Meg Mathis of UMMC, who received the scholarship last year. "My favorite aspect of attending was being a part of a large group of like-minded young professionals in an environment that promoted professional development."
Scholarship recipients in 2018 in Kansas City included Johnny Campbell, Rubana Khan, Van-Vi Le (attended but was not a scholarship winner), Meg Mathis, and Marco Garcia.
