Practice Guideline Survey Series - Accountabilities in Different Roles

To help identify learning opportunities and facilitate communication between kinesiologists and the CKO, the CKO is continuing its series of surveys regarding Practice Standards and Guidelines.

The fifth survey of this series is focused on three documents; the Practice Standard - Professional Collaboration, the Practice Standard - Supervision and Education of Students and Support Personnel and the Practice Guideline - Accountabilities in Different Roles. This information is important for kinesiologists, given the wide range of practice environments and roles in which they practice in Ontario.

Practice Standards and Guidelines Survey Series

Consent Response Report

CKO launched the third Practice Standards and Guidelines survey on the Practice Standard – Consent and Practice Guideline - Consent in July. We received many responses from kinesiologists and are pleased to provide a report on the survey results. Some highlights:

  • Generally, consent can either be express or implied, with express being given directly and implied consent being inferred from signs, actions or facts, or by inaction or silence. However, implied consent cannot always be relied upon.

  • In situations where a person is incapable of giving or refusing consent, consent may be given or refused on that person’s behalf by a substitute decision-maker. The Health Care Consent Act, 1996 includes a list of substitute decision makers, ranked in order of priority. The highest "rank" is "1. The incapable person’s guardian of the person, if the guardian has authority to give or refuse consent to the treatment.”
