Practice Guideline Survey Series - Infection Control

To help identify learning opportunities and facilitate communication between kinesiologists and the CKO, the CKO is continuing its series of surveys regarding Practice Standards and Guidelines.

The seventh survey of this series is focused on the Practice Standard – Infection Control. This information is important for kinesiologists, given their wide range of practice environments and roles.

The College is also continuing to develop new exam content, following the revalidation of the Kinesiologist Core Competency Profile. The Examination Committee met on September 25 and September 26, 2024, and will meet again in October.

Practice Standards and Guidelines Survey Series

Accountabilities in Different Roles Report

CKO launched the survey on the Practice Standard - Professional Collaboration, the Practice Standard - Supervision and Education of Students and Support Personnel and the Practice Guideline - Accountabilities in Different Roles in the August issue of the e-newsletter. We received many responses from kinesiologists and are pleased to provide a report on the survey results. Some highlights:

  • Kinesiologists who responded to the survey reported a wide range of roles and responsibilities, including: Being the sole practitioner in their practice, describing themselves as supervisors/employers, practicing as assistants or in a supporting role, conducting research and more.
  • When supervising students or support personnel, kinesiologists should remember that, depending on the knowledge, skill and judgment of the student or support personnel, the kinesiologist does not necessarily have to provide direct supervision.
  • However, there are some specific tasks that the College does not permit kinesiologist to assign to students or support personnel.
  • Do you know what these tasks are?

Quality Assurance - Introduction to Self Assessment

The 2023-2024 Self-assessment will be launching on December 1. The Self-assessment allows kinesiologists to reflect on their practice by asking a series of questions related to the practice standards and Essential Competencies of Practice, and identify areas for growth and development. Kinesiologists are required to identify a minimum of three learning goals, which form the basis of Continuing Professional Development.

Covid-19 and Seasonal Respiratory Illness

The Ontario Ministry of Health released the Seasonal Respiratory Pathogen Guide in July.

As we move into Fall, respiratory viruses such as influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) become more common. Covid-19 patterns also remain atypical and continue to affect the health and well-being of Ontarians.

It is vital that kinesiologists take steps to protect themselves as well as their patients and clients. Review the CKO's Practice Standard on Infection Control.
