Multicultural Fair

This month, we have been focusing on preparing for our multicultural fair. The purpose of the fair is to introduce our youth to new cultures while giving them the opportunity to showcase their own. As they worked in groups to create their booths, they also developed teamwork skills.

Members learned about the significance of different countries' flags, cuisine, culture, sports, and activities. They also had the chance to enjoy delicious treats from each country. Our members are excited to do this again soon—either to learn about new cultures or to share their own with friends!

-Justice St. Elementary-

For the past month, students from our club and council have been working hard to bring our multicultural fair to life. This event celebrates eight diverse cultures: Mexico, Colombia, El Salvador, Japan, Philippines, Italy, Armenia, and Nigeria.

The students selected these cultures themselves and have spent weeks learning about their traditions, history, and customs. Their excitement and dedication have been truly inspiring. They have taken the initiative to research, plan, and organize various aspects of the event, including food and presentations.

This experience has not only deepened their understanding of different cultures but has also fostered a greater appreciation for diversity within our community. More than just an event, this fair is an opportunity for students to create a space where everyone can learn from one another.

We are incredibly proud of their hard work and can’t wait to see the positive impact it has on our school and community!

Art Contest: Power of Kindness

Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley school sites participated in the Power of Kindness Art Contest.

Multicultural Fair

The month of March has been an exciting time filled with learning about new cultures and creating beautiful memories. At Reseda, we hosted our Multicultural Fair, highlighting eight countries: France, Jamaica, Japan, India, Mexico, Guatemala, and Portugal.

Throughout the month, members participated in various activities, which were displayed at each booth. Our staff created an incredible experience by incorporating music, games, snacks, face painting, and interactive passport stamping as members asked questions and explored each country.

In our community, our strength is our diversity.

HIP-HOP

The Hip Hop program at the Boys & Girls Club after-school program at Serrania, led by the talented Steve “Gremz” Roybal, is a dynamic and engaging initiative designed to provide students with a creative outlet through Hip Hop culture, music, and movement. Starting on January 27th, this 15-week program quickly became a favorite among students, fostering confidence, teamwork, and artistic expression in a positive and inclusive environment.

One of the most special aspects of this program is the leadership of Steve “Gremz” Roybal, whose passion and expertise in Hip Hop have been truly inspiring. The students’ excitement speaks for itself, as they are already asking for more sessions beyond the original 15 weeks!

-Woodland Hills Elementary-

The 4th and 5th grade members at WHECES have started working on their Multicultural Passport Fair projects! In small groups, they are researching different countries and exploring their cultures. On April 4th, they will present their findings to the rest of the Boys and Girls Club members, and parents are welcome to attend! The members are enjoying learning about their own and others' cultures while collaborating with friends. We can’t wait to see their final projects!

Multicultural Passport Fair

-Teen Center-

This month, TTC covered a highly demanded topic. Members learned about recent immigration policies and procedures, as well as how to properly handle a potential I.C.E. encounter. TTC did a great job keeping members informed about their rights and guiding them through a step-by-step family preparedness plan.

Members were shown the difference between a non-valid warrant and a valid order, helping them identify a valid warrant signed by a U.S. magistrate judge. They were also provided with various resources regarding immigration in Southern California.

This topic was very well received and gave members confidence in navigating these situations.

TUPE “Say No’ Event

Advocates for Healthy Choices (AFHC) aims to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and vaping, encouraging students to make informed decisions. AFHC also supports students who are trying to quit or avoid these habits. The program hosts classroom presentations and monthly campaign events targeting peers within the school community. Participation ranges from 3 to 8 students per session.

Currently, we are collaborating with teachers to recruit more members. The ultimate goal of the program is to help club members develop leadership skills while promoting a healthier, smoke-free environment. Sessions will take place every Wednesday until the end of the school year.

A unique aspect of the program is its peer-led approach, which empowers students to take an active role in educating and supporting their classmates.

-Chatsworth High School-

The ESPORTS program has fostered strong teamwork among its members, leading their teams to victory in multiple tournaments since last semester. Their growth continues as they strive for further achievements. The team meets every day after school to practice, with Coach Robert providing guidance to help them improve. They compete in various games, including Valorant, Fortnite, Super Smash Bros., Chess, and Rocket League.

ART TIE-DYE

This month, as part of the art program, members explored tie-dyeing as a creative medium. The program is designed to encourage artistic expression and experimentation among youth, providing hands-on experience with different art techniques. It runs from Tuesday to Thursday, with each day focusing on a different medium. The target audience includes club members who are interested in developing their artistic skills. With guidance from Wes, who provided multiple design examples, participants carefully selected their colors and patterns. Some were so eager to see their creations that they unwrapped their shirts early, proudly showcasing their unique designs. This program highlights the joy of creative expression and allows members to take home a tangible piece of their work.
