Tarrant County Republican commissioners sued over reduction in election voting sites

A group of voters is suing Tarrant County and its Republican leaders to force them to restore nearly 100 polling places they cut ahead of the midterm elections. The lawsuit argues the cuts disenfranchise more than 1 million registered voters in Tarrant County, with the heaviest burden on Black and Hispanic communities, many of whom live in Fort Worth. Four women — city councilwoman Deborah Peoples, former city councilwoman Kathleen Hicks, and retired judge Maryellen Hicks, who are all Black, and elected Fort Worth ISD trustee Camille Rodriguez, who is Hispanic — filed the suit Friday in district court.

Our Voices: What Good Is Winning If we Lose our Moral Compass?

By Rev. Peter Johnson

I have spent much of my life in churches, meeting rooms and on street corners, talking with people about the kind of country we want to leave our children. Sometimes those conversations were about voting. Sometimes they were about justice. But underneath them was a question: What are we willing to stand for when standing costs us something? That question came back to me when I read about state Sen. Angela Paxton’s speech to a gathering of Texas Republican women.

It is working, and I’m keeping hope alive. Thank you, Mrs. R.J. I really appreciate you restoring my faith in my work. Mrs. R.J. read my column last week, where I talked about the deadline to ensure you are eligible to vote and haven’t been erased, cancelled, or disenfranchised. She said she checked on line and found her name missing from the list of registered voters. Mrs. R.J., a senior citizen, thankfully had a daughter to help her, and she also had my number, which I had listed in last week’s newspaper.

Black Voters are Turning Out, But not Out of Trust

By Shelby Stewart

With the midterm elections just weeks away, Black voters are telling researchers the same two things at once: we are showing up, and we do not believe the system has earned it. The finding comes from early results of the 2026 Black Census Project, released by Black Futures Lab. Drawn from the first 6,000 respondents, who live in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the data offers one of the largest portraits of Black voters in a midterm year.

For Black Families, the Fight to Build Wealth Starts Long Before the Will Is Read

A child can inherit a family’s financial history long before they ever receive any money. It might show up in the house a grandmother bought at 30 and still owns at 75, in college tuition paid without loans, in stocks bought for a teenager to grow over time, or in parents who can help their child buy a first home. Another child might inherit a different story: no property.

Bethune-Cookman running back ground explosion earns SWAC honor

Rashon Brown’s emergence as one of Bethune-Cookman’s most dangerous offensive weapons continued Saturday, when the redshirt freshman running back delivered a breakout performance. Brown rushed 31 times for a career-high 260 yards and a touchdown as Bethune-Cookman defeated Alabama State 16-10 in its SWAC opener. The outing ranked third in school history for rushing yards in a single game, and Brown averaged 8.4 yards per carry. It also earned Brown SWAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. For Bethune-Cookman coach Raymond Woodie Jr., however, Brown’s success is hardly a surprise. Woodie on Monday said the Wildcats identified Brown’s potential when they recruited him out of Pahokee, Florida. After seeing Brown get limited opportunities as a freshman last season, Bethune-Cookman expected him to take on a larger role this year.

Have Dense Breasts? Here’s Why a Standard Mammogram Might not be Enough

By Derrick Lane

BlackDoctor

https://blackdoctor.org/

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women globally. In the United States, about one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. Breast cancer screenings—such as self-exams and mammograms—are crucial for detecting the disease in its early stages before it spreads to other parts of the body. Despite the effectiveness of mammograms, it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach for every woman. New research suggests that more advanced technology is necessary to detect breast cancer cells in women with dense breast tissue.

DAILY REMEMBRANCE

Somebody woke up to a void today and is trying to find their way.

Somebody won't be able to make things right because of things they didn't get a chance to say.

Somebody is wishing they could turn back time and gaze into a loved one's eyes. Somebody's heart has been broken by death, and all they can do is cry.

Somebody has fallen to their knees with the weight of sadness today.

Somebody is learning that the only way up from here is to stay on their knees and pray.
