Commitment to Inclusion:
Building a Collaborative and Innovative Culture
| |
A Message from Our President Brenda Laurenza and VP of Operations Matt Grosshandler | |
|
As we enter our fifteenth year of business, Bald Hill Builders continues to make community involvement, philanthropy, and inclusion the foundation of our corporate DNA and social fabric. Matt and I have engrained this culture in everything we do and in each aspect of our business. We ensure that our commitment to inclusion and the communities we serve is known at all levels of the business and reflected in our people. This is essential to fostering a dynamic and collaborative work environment. Advancing inclusion is the foundation of how we operate, how we treat people, and how we engage with our team. To this end, we have implemented several key practices to ensure that every individual, regardless of their background, has a voice and a meaningful place within our organization.
Our commitment is exemplified through the development of an inclusive workplace culture where diverse perspectives are actively sought and valued. We foster an environment where open dialogue is encouraged, allowing team members to share their ideas and concerns without fear of bias or retaliation. Additionally, we provide equitable opportunities for career advancement, ensuring all employees have access to the resources and support necessary to thrive and grow within the company.
By embedding these inclusionary practices into our daily operations, we enhance team cohesion and collaboration, leading to more effective problem-solving and decision-making. Valuing diverse perspectives not only enriches our work environment but also drives innovation and increases productivity, as a variety of viewpoints contribute to more creative and comprehensive solutions. Ultimately, our dedication to inclusion strengthens our organizational culture, supports our team’s professional development, and contributes to the overall success and growth of Bald Hill Builders.

SUBCONTRACTOR SPOTLIGHT
Q&A - Victor Erazo of Erazo Concrete
In the Fall of 2023, following a twenty-year career working for larger concrete companies, Victor Erazo started Erazo Concrete as an MBE and Section 3 business. Erazo Concrete hit the ground running and almost overnight lined up several projects, including a few for Bald Hill Builder. Recognizing Victor’s ambition and the need for a well-grounded concrete partner, Bald Hill Builders’ VP of Operations, Matt Grosshandler, offered to guide and mentor Victor as he took on this new adventure. Focused on Victor’s success and drawing from his own business experience, Matt began offering Victor and his team lessons on effective business management.
Knowing how hard it is to combat all the tasks associated with starting a new business, Matt felt compelled to guide Victor to success. In addition to making introductions, Matt also spent several days working with Victor’s team to teach cash flow management, the importance of business economics, as well as several other industry-specific requirements (like maintaining RFI Logs and the importance of timely and accurate submittals). Says Matt “I feel a responsibility to support new, MBE, and WBE businesses in overcoming challenges and achieving their full potential.” Victor has been a sponge, and you can often see he and Matt collaborating on ways to improve the Erazo – Bald Hill partnership.

Q. What does inclusion mean to you in the workplace, and how have you seen it reflected at Bald Hill Builders?
A. Inclusion in the workplace means being my authentic self while feeling supported and valued. It also means supporting my colleagues’ authenticity, origin, and personal challenges. It allows me to express my ideas openly and confidently, knowing that my contributions are respected while also respecting and making space for my colleagues. At Bald Hill Builders, I've seen this reflected in the company's commitment to fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are embraced, and everyone is encouraged to support one another. This inclusive culture not only enhances teamwork but also empowers us all to excel.

Q. What does inclusion mean to you in the workplace, and how have you seen it reflected at Bald Hill Builders?
A. Although it can be difficult for some people to understand, inclusion at Bald Hill Builders means real inclusion—not just words on paper. Here at BHB, there are no barriers, and I can pursue any role I desire; it’s all up to me. I believe we truly don’t know anyone until we give them the opportunity to show what they are capable of delivering. At Bald Hill Builders, I was given that opportunity, and I consider it the best opportunity I’ve had so far. In addition to working at BHB, I’ve been invited to all social activities, which have introduced me to American culture—such as food, sports, and entertainment. I feel very welcome and have a strong sense of belonging.

The building will include approximately 3,200 square feet of non-residential space along Columbus Avenue with bicycle storage, laundry facilities, and a community room for residents. This building will utilize a high-efficiency heating system and building envelope with Energy Star-rated appliances and a rooftop solar PV array. The development will meet the U.S. Green Building Council LEED Homes Platinum certifiable standard and is pursuing PHIUS Passive House CORE Certification.
