Friends and Supporters,

It may be the holiday season but planning, zoning, and transportation issues haven’t gone on holiday yet!

Three Richmond City-Wide Zoning Changes

The City of Richmond will be sharing updates on three proposed zoning changes:

  • Revising short-term rental regulations (think AirBnb and VRBO)
  • Eliminating minimum parking space requirements and letting the market decide
  • Making it easier to have an accessory dwelling unit (ADU)

All of these are important to the future of the city and your input is needed. Making it easier to have an ADU allows people to age in place, have a supplementary income, and provides affordable housing options. Eliminating parking space minimums will help future developments be more transit-oriented and lessen some of the costs to creating more affordable housing. Short-term rentals may be having an impact on housing available for longer term rental at a time we need more housing and there are other issues as well.

GRTC Pulse Extension on West Broad Street

GRTC and PlanRVA (our regional planning organization) are studying possible extension of the Pulse Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line west, beyond its current terminus at Willow Lawn and out to Short Pump. This is a critical expansion of the Pulse that will connect residents in the County to jobs in the City and vice versa, as well as offer frequent service that the community can rely on instead of automobiles.

While it may not need dedicated lanes yet, a Pulse extension to Short Pump that has signal priority (where the bus can hold a light green) and queue jumps (where the bus can go first ahead of the cars)  would be a game-changer in how people can get around our region.

They want to hear your priorities, travel behavior, and barriers to travel. Your input and support for this extension will be crucial to ensuring that it works best for everyone.

The survey runs until December 16, 2022. You can access the survey here
