TRIO E-News
April, 2021
Greetings!

How are you supporting
National Donate Life Month?

National Donate Life Month was established by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations in 2003. Observed in April each year, National Donate Life Month helps to encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to honor those that have saved lives through the gift of donation. This is a perfect time to share your own story in support of that message.

Note: Launch your own birthday, transplant anniversary, or other life event celebration event - or in memory of your donor or other loved one - with a Facebook funding campaign for TRIO using this link:
Our March COVID vaccine poll results

And here is what our responders said . . .
Medical experts are saying more and more that the three available vaccines are safe for transplant patients to receive. But check with your own programs for their advice unique to your own situation as the vaccines are becoming more and more available. Vaccinated or not, keep following the CDC guidelines of safe distancing, wearing a mask and washing hands to avoid getting the virus.

TRIO urges YOU to stay safe!
Sincerely,
Jim Gleason

UNOS Discusses Geographical Equity in Kidney Transplantation

On March 15, new policies became effective regarding kidney and pancreas allocation. These policies are projected to increase equity in access to transplant for kidney and pancreas candidates across the country. The package of changes aims to distribute organs more fairly to people waiting for an organ, and has incorporated input from both patients and professionals.

You can read more about these new policies in the Feature Improvement section of the UNOS website here.

New Book Reviews

Two new transplant-related books have just been added to the TRIO website book review section (see Book reviews under RESOURCES or click here).
Susan May, mother/author, celebrated her son Nick’s 30th heart transplant anniversary March 21st with Nick’s New Heart: 30 Years and Counting, 2nd Edition released March 21st, an update to her original 2008 edition with new focus on family and her role in the early years leading up to Nick’s age of 19, now with a new second half telling all that has happened since up through 2021. An exciting and inspiring read.
EXHALE: Hope, Healing and a Life in Transplant is being released May 11th and shares the life story of David Weill, lung transplant doctor who headed up the Stanford transplant program for many years before he left to rediscover himself after decades in that exciting and emotional field. Along with a review of his book, the TRIO Transplant Presentation Library now has an hour-long in-depth interview with the author that will provide even more depth to that book read.
In-home blood draw service offered by CareDx
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, CareDx launched RemoTraC: Home-based blood draws for transplant patients. RemoTraC is available to all patients who want their transplant monitoring lab tests to be drawn from the comfort of their home by trained mobile phlebotomists. RemoTraC includes AlloSure and/or AlloMap, CareDx's surveillance tests, along with a panel of routine tests.

Patients can sign up for RemoTraC through an easy to use webpage: www.caredx.com/remotrac.

Once enrolled in RemoTraC, a CareDx Patient Care Manager will coordinate with your transplant center and contact you by phone to schedule an appointment. Prior to the appointment, we will mail you a test kit. A licensed mobile technician will then come to your home, take a blood sample, and deliver the sample to the lab for processing. CareDx will fully cover the cost of the mobile phlebotomist, and will ensure you pay no additional out-of-pocket expenses beyond what you typically pay for these tests.

TRIO thanks CareDx for the many ways they support our mission.
